King vs. Dinos

Aug 11, 2006 17:05

It was safe to say, at this point, King was pretty much a disgruntled mess. He had gone to sleep one day, only to wake up in unfamilar jungle with a giant lizard in his lap. It was easy enough to dispose of with a good hard kick, but the thing seemed to have fucking family or something, which kept King pretty much busy for a good day or so, having ( Read more... )

Fraser heard the door open and slam shut and exchanged a look with Billy. He put his finger to his lips to indicate Billy should be quiet and then stood from his bedside, exiting the dormatory as quietly as he could manage. He entered the hallway to see a man braced against the door.

"Hello, sir," he said, pitching his voice in a friendly timbre. "My name is Constable Benton Fraser. I don't suppose you're from a search and rescue party, are you?"

King tensed briefly when he heard someone speak, if only because he hadn't really expected anyone to be around. He turned around and found himself staring at... a mountie? Hadn't Frannie mentioned something about a mountie? King gave him a weird look, the guy looked almost exactly like Chris.

"Do I look like a fucking search and rescue party?" King said, vaguely aware that he was still being chewed on. He hadn't meant to sound as irritated as he did, but quite frankly, he was irritated.

Fraser noticed the dinosaur was not in fact, dead as he had imagined, although the man did not seem to notice. "Are you requiring some assistance removing the dinosaur from your leg?"

"What?" King asked, still staring at the mountie who was clearly not Chris. Wasn't there a sailor involved too?

"Fuck." King glared down at the thing that was biting him and shook his leg to try and get it off. "Get the fuck off. I said. Get. The. Fuck. OFF!"

With a particularly hard kick, King managed to fling it, sending it flying across the room. It bounced off a table and squealed, running for safety soon after. King was really starting to wish for a gun at this point. Things would be a lot easier if he could just shoot them.

Fraser watched the dinosaur disappear and arched an eyebrow. He wasn't going to allow a dinosaur, no matter how small, to run freely around the Outpost.

He turned to the man in front of him. "You must be King," he hazarded.

"Yeah," King said, calming himself down for a moment before looking back at the mountie guy. He gave him a skeptical look. "How'd you know that?"

"You look like Mr. Dick," Fraser explained with a small smile. "And you're not disoriented or upset enough to have just arrived."

King just nodded back, deciding to ignore the whole Joe thing. He looked around instead, taking in his surroundings. "Fraser, right? What is this place?"

King still felt a little tense, wary. If another dinosaur popped out from somewhere he was going to punch it in the fucking face. Or perhaps step on it. Or rip out its throat. Sounded good to him. It'd probably make him feel better anyway.

"Yes, Mr. King. This place seems to be some sort of Outpost or observation building for the scientists who first occupied this island." He looked at the man's leg. "Are you in need of medical attention? The wound should be sterilized at least."

King took in what Fraser had said for a moment before he looked down at himself with a frown. His pant legs were pretty much chewed up all over from various attacks, but he hadn't been too concerned until now. "You think so? It doesn't really hurt."

Fraser frowned and nodded, waving King towards the dormatory part of the Outpost with one hand. "One should always remember the Five S's--Safe Sterilization Staves Superfluous Suffering."

"The five whats?" King grunted as he limped over to where Fraser had pointed. He wasn't even going to bother to try and hide it anymore. "Is that something they teach you in mountie school?"

"No," Fraser replied briefly and held open the door to the dormatory. "I believe you are acquainted with Billy Tallent?"

Billy lay in a heap on the cot, his glassy eyes staring up at a popcorn ceiling. His fever had come back at some point during the night, making him sweat through the thin t-shirt and boxers he wore. The blankets were bunched by his feet, close enough that Billy could tug them over himself if he got cold.

He heard a door slam somewhere and Billy jerked, startling slightly. He heard muffled voices followed by a curse, a thump, then voices again. Then, footsteps.

Joe?

"Yeah. Why?" King said as he started to walk into the dormatory, but noticed Billy lying there on a bed. He looked even more fucked up than King, if that were possible.

King stopped short for a moment, looking at Billy, not sure what to think of it. Had other people ended up in dino territory too? Like with the kid thing? Then why and hell hadn't King seen anyone until now?

"What happened to him?"

"He fell out of a tree," Fraser explained with a brief tightening of lips. "And has been feverish. I haven't been able to leave his side to go back to the Compound, and unfortunately you are the first to have found the Outpost."
