I love this:
the LH Collider. Ten billion dollars to smash li'l bits together.

So this scientist is chatting on the Newshour. The gist ( Read more... )

Actually, the evidence supporting the seculation about the existence of so-called "dark matter" is the fact that the visible universe does not have enough matter to account for the observed gravity effects within the visible universe. The math supports the existence of a different type of matter within the visible universe which could account for this observed gravity effect. Einstein originally theorized the existence of "dark matter", but then discarded the idea. Similarly, so-called "dark energy" has been postulated to explain the observed accelerated expansion of the visible universe.

CERN's Large Hadron Collider has the potential to open up new avenues of scientific exploration of how the universe works. This is far from abstract knowledge, the technological advances inherent in learning how the universe works could have enormous benefits. Even negative information is still useful data.

You know what I think? Why are we spending $10 billion to try to understand "dark matter" that may or may not exist, when people are starving, can't afford a home, and can't get an education or a job?

Not that the study of it isn't interesting (I've actually read some stuff on that subject before), it just seems very unnecessary and excessive.

I don't begrudge the collider or the pursuit of knowledge.
It's simply a perspective.

We spend ten billion a month in Iraq...
