ive definitely grown into my new home. its quite nice. only major crazy thing that has happened is a 650 dollar power bill. im assuming the a/c compressor was busted or our energy meter is trashed. they're trying to reimburse me for this outrageous charge, so im not too angry.

onto other things, life has been as busy as ever. between working a day job and my gig for harper collins, im pulling in 60-80 hour weeks. while this makes almost no time for my girlfriend, relaxing, films, friends or music, it pushes my skills to the limit. the good news is that the book is almost complete with 12 pages left before i leap into post-production. and what am i doing afterwards???

im taking a solid 2 week break.

i have some interesting things planned during this break, foremost a new updated website. i will also be posting some unrelated work art and vinyl work. look forward to it! trust me, i do.

now its time for a SHANE DIGGIN'S update...

MOVIES

Ratatouille :: i missed this film for a while due to a busy work schedule, but i caught it last week. this movie blew my mind! exceeded all expectations(which were high, brad bird and all) i almost have to say i like it more then the incredibles? such heart and brilliant animation. definitely my favorite for the year.

Transformers :: exactly what i expected. definitely some great action and graphics. a total summer flick! stupid as hell but fun! starscream totally owned up the screen(at least what screentime he had)

The French Connection :: i've had this film in my film collection for a few months now. just the other night i was able to get around to watching it. this film made me understand why gene hackman is the cats meow. what a character! he made something created on paper into a completely breathing and living human being. and yes, the car chase is worth the fame it boasts. definitely a must see.

HP and The Order of the Phoenix :: i read the book(my first read hp book ever) prior to seeing the film. i really enjoyed the film but i did feel i spoiled myself my reading the book. i really wish they made it an extra 20 minutes longer to fill in some of the more juicy things the book held. the last battle was pretty okay, a little hard to follow but pretty good. the dumbledore/voldemort battle was OUTSTANDING for the 2 minutes it lasted. i would put this behind azkaban(my favorite). im curious to see how the last two films pan out.

Die Hard 4 :: meh. they could've titled it any other name and i wouldn't have noticed. still a pretty good action movie, just not the mcclaine we all grew up with. hell, mcclaine calls people jackoff's for half the movie! i swear i had tears in my eyes.

ART UPDATE

well, like i said earlier i am nearing the end of the first book. production has been speeding up as well. it used to take me 8 hours to do a page, to where i can do one in 3 now. this makes getting 3 pages done a day pretty easy. well, for today i have posted a little walkthrough of my process(minus post-production). i hope you enjoy one of the last glimpses of the book before it hits shelves in spring 2008...

THUMBNAILS/CONCEPTS
one of the first things i do when i start a page is pull out two booklets. one booklet contains all the concept art/sketches i have done for the book and the other contains the thumbnails for the entire book. i usually keep both of these at my left the entire time i work on a page. it makes for good reference if i get stuck. of course, i place the script above it as well.

PENCILS/LAYOUT
this first big step i take when doing a page. i have cheap 9x12 sketch paper and where ilay out the gesture movements and such. i dont do too much detailing at this point. i just make a point of getting to inks as quickly as possible.

FINAL PENCILS/INKS
once done with the layout, i lightbox it onto a sheet of 9x12 bristol. once done, i make clean pencils of the linework(not shown) and then progress to ink. on average, it takes about 2 hours to ink a page. after this is done, i clean minor details up and tape the page up to the top left corner of my art desk as reference for the next page.

and on a side note, here is a sketch of two hp characters i did while waiting in line for hp...

im watching you...

vinyl, harper collins, ratatouille, harry potter, prince of underwhere
