Hand Slapping the Nutjobs

There was a moment today when I wondered if, behind closed doors, John McCain doesn't sit down, take a chug from his milk of magnesia and wonder who and why the fuck he has to court the vote of so many clearly misguided and down right stupid people in order to get into the White House.  I mean, 8 years ago he didn't have to court the religious right.  He let GW do that (and well, that and Karl Rove might have cost him the bid).  But this time, well... he has to smile welcoming into the faces with frothy mouths and pinwheeling eyes.  I mean, have you seen some of 'em on YouTube from the various rallies?  I don't know if they even know what they know, you know?  The general consensus seems to be that Obama can't be trusted because of his name and that he's clearly a socialist or a terrorist or both.  It's the socialism thing that gets me becaus so many of the folks look like the have nots and not the haves...  Head scratch.

Me, I think McCain got in it because he was the least wacky elephant in the paddock and he got a case of the O-What-The-Hells--at this point I'm not sure if he's in there all the way.  Palin was clearly a mistep...  And sometimes I wonder if McCain himself isn't an agnostic.  Anyhow, enough of my ramblings.  I just saw this on the AP Wire (a new part of my morning routine is to check the AP Wire on the free iPhone App, Mobile News, for latest) and it got me to thinking so I thought I would share it:

Today a woman at a ralley was quoted as saying to McCain:

"I don't trust Obama... I have read about him.  He's an Arab."

(from the AP wire): McCain shook his head in disagreement, and said:

"No ma'am.  He's a decent, family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with (him) on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign is all about."

He had drawn boos with his comment: "I have to tell you, he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

Setting aside the fact that his statement can be turned to the point that "oh, all Arabs are indecent swingers then?" but I'll let that go.  It was just nice to see McCain not give into the crazy.  Of course, this comes at the same time that his running mate Sarah-Plain-and-Touched was quoted as saying that Obama had a history of "palling around with terrorists" because of his loose association with a radical from the 60s.

I wonder what is really going on in McCain's head...
