Wednesday night went to go see In Fields Where They Lay, a workshop reading of a new in-process play about the
Christmas Truce. Alan (from Suckers) was in it, as the upper-class British officer, as well as the cockney mail deliverer. A lot of it was really good.
The end of act I brought me to goosebumps and tears with the entire cast singing "Silent Night" with their unseen enemies from across the wasteland. They were all singing in unison, then broke into major harmonies, each of them breaking off, one by one, to speak to the audience briefly about how their character felt, then going back to the song. Then Alan's line, "And I felt we should retaliate": and he and a couple of others began "The First Noel" in counterpoint, which stays with "Silent Night" for a bit, but then goes into a completely different key, making some amazingly powerful dissonances. Gorgeous stuff. Script still needs a little work, but I'm sure that'll get done by the time they open in December.
Also in the cast was Kevaughn Harvey, who was cast in Prince Trevor for a hot minute before he had to drop out (and was replaced with Jason, so that was all good), and Zack Calhoon, who of course used to do tons of Shakespeare at DeBaun and now is involved with Oberon.
Lots of people I knew in the audience. Went out drinking with Alan and some of the cast afterward.
Last night I read as part of Kathleen's Drunken! Careening! Writers! series, which was exciting. I read a few monologues from my plays- one of Jesse's from The Wastes of Time, one of Luisa's from Sweeter Dreams, and rounded it off with Pasiphæ's big monologue from Amazing Dædalus. I was a little nervous, but people seemed to like it.
Then stopped off at Marie's Crisis for the first time in what seems like weeks. It was nice and a lot of fun till a couple of straight girl birthday parties showed up, and I went home.
Finally have a full cast confirmed for my Empress of Sex reading. Very exciting!
