Prince Trevor Amongst the Elephants Opens Tonight!
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
On Overheard in New York again! I thought I'd made an event on MySpace for my show, but now I think it was only for the benefit. But in searching for "Prince Trevor", I found this entry on the blog of Rob, from Instant Shakespeare, regarding
the day I showed up:
I playmastered the Instant Shakespeare Company reading today of Love's Labors Lost. I had lost an actor last night because I tried to flatter him into playing a role he didn't feel was right for him. So two hours before the reading, I was still one person short and planning to make somebody have a conversation with himself on stage (and I hadn't yet figured out who) before my friend David Brown (who really didn't have the time) confirmed he was coming.
Fifteen minutes before the reading, another actor had to drop out for an unplanned matinee he was in, and this guy Duncan Pflaster, who was just there to support his friend, volunteered to take the role. I knew nothing of Duncan's abilities, but I figured beggars can't be choosers.
Turns out Duncan is a terrific comedic actor and Shakespearean. The rest of the cast was great, especially all the ladies (Daniella Rabanni, Anna Savant, Anne Roser and Elizabeth Ruelas) who -- never working together before today -- immediately created the perfect renaissance coffee clatch. And the whole experience was just the sexy literary romp it was supposed to be.
I think this is the real joy of producing. I plan and I enroll. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I screw things up, and then I am reminded that nothing is under my control.
By the way, Duncan's play Prince Trevor Amongst the Elephants has just been accepted into this year's Midtown International Theatre Festival. The show will have a production in July (dates TBA).
Met up for a quick fight call in the space (another show dropped out of the festival, so we were lucky there was a gap there where the theater was empty).
kellygirlnyc's sword broke, but Costume Designer said he'd bring one in.
alexlady came to paint the elephant puppet sticks black. She just did it on the street outside Cref's truck. I'd found the Moulin Rouge! vocal selections online, and printed out a copy of "Come What May" for her and
darksheik.
Then I went to get more props- a broom and a tray. Jack's 99 cent store rather unhelpful, but found acceptable stuff.
Then back in the rehearsal space.
Discovered the flask (which was a Groomsman present from
darksheik and
alexlady's wedding, engraved with my name) was missing. Very upset- went down to Cref's truck to see if it had fallen out of the bag or something. Didn't find it. Fortunately it was in the Where Eagles Dare lost and found. Whew! I'm still missing my monkey light keychain that Tony got me, which
son_of_ottie was using onstage. You'd think by now I'd have learned not to use my own fucking things as props in a show.
Rehearsal went well, for a not-in-the-actual-space dress rehearsal. Everyone a little shaky but great. They're going to tear up the stage tonight.
actress_in_nyc came to be our audience (she'll be out of town for all the performances except tonight's, when she has to work). She liked it a lot.
A few of us went for a drink afterward at The Zipper Café. Patricia treated everyone, which was super-nice. We were joined by Akilah, Chris' girlfriend.
