not a lady

Jan 31, 2011 14:17

Say that someone makes a post to a fandom community and addresses the members of that community as "ladies." Is it okay to politely respond that not everyone in the fandom/on the comm is a woman? Some of us are men (trans* or cis), some of us are genderqueer, androgynous, or otherwise not women. (And I'd imagine some of the women in the fandom don't much care to be called "ladies," but that's perhaps a separate issue.)

ETA: I should mention, especially for those who don't know me, that my concern isn't really for cisgendered men who, for once, might in online fandom experience not being the default. It's primarily for people like me: trans*, or genderqueer or androgynous or another non-standard gender identity, who have to deal with being misgendering and erasure all the damn time by the dominant culture.

ETA 2: I did respond, in the end, and the OP has replied very graciously. But discussion here can certainly continue if anybody wants it to.
