Colors of the Great Gatsby
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, colors are used to separate the classes, the lifestyles, and the characters. Fitzgerald uses different colors to express different feelings throughout the novel. The setting of the novel is expressed through color also. He is able to change the feeling and the mood with his description of colors of the different settings. The colors expressed throughout the novel remain constant for each specific area. The colors play a major role in expressing the way Fitzgerald wanted the characters and settings to be portrayed.
In Long Island or the Eggs, the people and the city were represented with the colors white and gold. The reason white and gold were used is because the colors are usually associated with wealth or money. The people in the Eggs were usually dressed in white and their house filled with gold. “Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water and the history of the summer really begins on the evening I drove over there to have dinner with the Tom Buchanan.” This quote explains the way the people of the Eggs were as fashionable and rich as the white mansions they lived in. Throughout the movie during the tea party that Nick has with Daisy, Tom and Jordan, Daisy’s house is filled with white flowers, curtains, table cloths, carpets and dresses. Daisy is almost always dressed fully in white which portrays her as rich and fashionable.
The Valley of Ashes is the second setting in the Great Gatsby. The Valley of Ashes is portrayed as a lost hope. The colors used to describe the Valley of Ashes are dull colors, grays and blacks. I believe the Valley of Ashes is portrayed by these colors because the people in the Valley are usually sad with despair or hopeless. The Valley of Ashes is portrayed as poor and dirty. The gas station Mr. Wilson owns is filled with dust and fog most of the movie and the novel. “The gray land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it”, this quote can be used to the show the way everything in the Valley of ashes is hopeless and forgot because it is covered with grays which represent sadness and lost hope.
In the city the colors that portray the people and setting are loud and bright colors, such as red, blue and yellows. The reason these colors are used is because in the city it seems as everything is a party and there is a care-free environment associated usually with loud and bright colors. “The late afternoon sky bloomed in the window for a moment like the blue honey of the Mediterranean.” This quote explains how the city was similar to the color blue which is a bright color which dims in certain aspects. I believe the color blue symbolizes the bright, lively aspect of the city in the day, but as the night goes on the sins of the city are shown. In the movie Myrtle and her sister are dressed in wild yellow outfits with red lipstick and blue feathers in their hair. This shows the care-free vibe shown by the people when they come to the city.
Throughout the novel Fitzgerald uses the colors of the settings as a constant. No matter what is going on in a certain location the colors of that location are represented. The Valley of Ashes was always represented with dull colors such as grays and black to allow the feelings of hopelessness and loneliness to show. The colors of the city constantly remain bright and wild and exciting colors to show the care-free vibe the city gives off. The Eggs are white and gold because the way Fitzgerald wants to associate the factor of wealth into the Eggs’ description. The colors of the Great Gatsby allow Fitzgerald to explain the feelings of the characters and settings. The colors are able to set a mood and a tone to a certain part of the novel, which allows you to be able to connect the colors with the settings and certain descriptions.
