More than a week ago, I started seeing a promotion of a sale of Madame Alexander dolls, half-price, and I started ... wanting. Which I mentioned on Facebook because ... really, my husband, he wouldn't recognize a subtle hint if it were painted purple dancing naked on the harpsichord singing "Subtle hints are here again". To be fair, part of THIS particular not getting the message might be because he feels three large dolls are maybe three too many. HOWEVER, the friend who turned me onto the 18 inch doll phenomenon (which isn't exactly accurate because NONE of my dolls is actually 18 inches, two are smaller and one is larger) did get the hint. (Happy happy, joy joy.) She felt that her daughter needed a fourth as well, so she ordered two, which - because of the way the Madame does billing - will both be sent to her address.
During the course of our discussions on dolls, I uncovered the interesting information that D's slender doll is a BFC Ink doll AND with some research, I discovered the measurements for such a doll on-line.
And THEN, at Savers (a second-hand shop) I noticed a slender large doll. After some consideration, I purchased her because I thought she might do as a model for Alex, D's slender doll.
That thought, unfortunately, is not going to exactly fly. The doll is from Pleasant Company (the same people who brought us the original American Girl dolls), a Hopscotch Hill School model Gwen. She's 2 inches shorter than the BFC Ink dolls and proportionately smaller. Not that I'm disappointed in any way, when I first picked the doll up and saw how flexible she is, my first thought was "she'd be a great thief".
So, here's one of the things I've been doing - making student ID cards for the dolls to either Aldwyns Academy of Magic or MacCumhail Vo-tech for Adventurers and Heroes.
Two of my other dolls (I don't have a good face shot of Simon - he's been wearing his Professor Jones hat ever since he got glasses.)
(Notice, if you will, that "Hill" (Hilaria) is a mixed blood - pixie-human, and Oscar is listed as giant.)
There are two reasons I decided to make doll ID cards - firstly, I've been preparing the paperwork (passports, boarding passes, travel guides) for a trip to Paris for D's dolls. And as anyone who's tried to travel ANYWHERE since the turn of the millenium knows, you need some form of picture ID in order to get on the transport - especially planes. Secondly, I found I couldn't remember when I got Catori. So I went back through social media and found the dates whereupon I announced her arrival (and then Simon's) and that information is embedded in the SIN. Company and model names are in the red field below the picture because - as a doll tailor, I NEED that information in order to modify patterns.
Tim is passing and I must be going. More later.
