excerpts from the Aldwyns Academy manual (
A Practical Guide to Wizardry)
School Supplies
3 everyday robes (black)
1 ceremonial robe (this will be in the colour of your field)
wand - we recommend Olivanders for quality
1 pr - Boots of Speed (runes of "change" "help" "energy") (to get to class on time)
1 pr - Spider Climbing Slippers (information magic classes are held at the top of "Rapunzel's" tower)
1 Belt of Spell Resistance (in the appropriate colour) - w/ wand loop
1 Hat of Reduce Size (runes of "change" "free" "creature")
belt pouch (at least 1)
1 book bag - we recommend Heward's Handy Haversack(tm)
Footwear
from the manualA wizard's footwear is more than just something to cover the feet. Boots often contain enchantments that allow the wizard to do such things as cross lava (like Dragonscale Boots) or leap across a lake (like Seven League Boots). A well-to-do master wizard has a closet full of boots - a different pair for each occasion.
First year students should arrive at Aldwyns with - at minimum - Slippers of Spider Climbing to scale the tower where information magic classes are held (affectionately known as "Rapunzel's Tower, although the official name is "Astolat Hall") and Boots of Speed for everyday use. Boots of Speed are necessary because classes can be quite distant and there is not much time to make the class change. * Important Note : During class change, care MUST be taken to NOT run into others who are also trying to get to class. While first year students DO have the right of way, it is Bad Form to abuse the right.
Take special note of the runes on the boots "change" "help" "energy"
N.B. - Catori has a pair of Thunderbird cowboy boots her grandfather gave to her. These are very similar to the runic Boots of Speed. Her gilly shoes are made with spider-silk with the spells stitched into the soles.
Belt
A wizard's belt holds a holster or loop for his wand and pouches of spell-casting supplies. It is HIGHLY recommended that students invest in a Belt of Spell Resistance, as a precaution to provide extra protection in case of spell backfires.
Hats
While Aldwyns students are not required to wear hats, a Hat of Reduce Size is essential for illusion class. Most of the Tower of Illusion is given over to the Theatre; not much space was left over for classrooms. This was not considered a problem by the architect of the tower, Professor Keene, head of Aldwyns Illusion department. As a pixie, she scaled the classroom to what she found comfortable.
Book bag
Aldwyns students may use any type of book bag they choose, but we strongly suggest they invest in a Heward's Handy Haversack. This bag is an inexpensive version of the Bag of Holding - it is about the size and shape of a normal backpack, but it will hold all necessary schoolbooks and equipment without increasing in either weight or size.
N.B. - Simon uses a Poppin's Messenger Bag which he says is more comfortable than the Haversack while being just as convenient. It is somewhat more expensive, however.
Wands
from the manualShaft : The shaft, or handle, forms a connection between wand and wizard. It can be made from wood, bone, crystal, or metal. While you can choose any material for your wand, it is usually best to choose the shaft according to the season of your birth.
Spring birthday : wood
Summer birthday : crystal
Autumn birthday : bone
Winter birthday : metal
Carvings : The wand's carvings reflect the spirit of the wand and its wizard.
Charms : Some wizards embellish their wands with added charms in order to enhance the potency of particular spells. For example, phoenix feathers will increase the power of fire spells and dragon teeth make summoning spells stronger.
Focus : The focus is a crystal which concentrates the arcane energies collected in the wand.
Focus choices
Quartz - information magic; crystal balls are traditionally of quartz
Fire Opal - destruction magic
Amethyst - enchantment magic; favoured by magics of Faerie
Moonstone - illusion magic
Tigereye - summoning magic
Pearl - change magic
Jade - protection magic; jade is normally cool to the touch but burns hot when danger is near
N.B. - it is important to remember that the wandwork taught by Aldwyns Academy is the reverse of that taught at the Scottish school of wizardry. If the wrong wand is used - the wizard could end up casting the spell on him/her ownself.
