Aldwyns Academy belt colours
Red - undecided, all first year students must wear the red sash
Black - "destruction magic", aka defense against the dark arts, aka combat magic
Blue - illusion (corresponds to mundane theatre, chorus, music, etc)
Yellow - enchantment ... "twisting the hearts and minds of others to your will" (often used to cast love charms)
Orange - summoning ... "the art of magically calling animals and other creatures"
Purple - information, aka divination
Green - change magic, aka tranformation/ transmutation
White - protection magic, defense
Death magic, aka necromancy, is not taught at Aldwyns Academy.
Once a student has mastered his field of study, he is entitled to wear a robe of the colour signifying his speciality. At one time, students were required to wear the coloured robes, but this led to untried, untaught students being mistaken for masters of their art, often with serious consequences. Now Aldwyns students wear plain black robes during their years of schooling, with only the belt indicating their major.
Simon is majoring in information magic and summoning. He is entitled to wear a double sash but doesn't. He wears the purple. I wish I could say it's because his humble and doesn't put on airs (not that he does) but the real reason he doesn't wear a twined belt is because ... he doesn't like the colour orange.
