Today is just another Monday to some people but to me, it is Memorial Day. A day set aside to honor those persons who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country whether they believed in what they were doing or not. They gave of themselves so that we can remain unique among the world's countries; free and with liberty.
Many members of my immediate family have served their country and luckily none of them have had to make that sacrifice. My nephew is serving in the Army, currently deployed in Iraq. I pray that he and those with him remain safe and come home whole in mind and body. I know that this will be a life changing event for Seth. It's his first, long term time away from his brother, sisters and parents. I have a cousin in the Air Force currently serving. She's stationed in the US but has finished several tours overseas as well.
Last night, we watched the Memorial Day concert from Washington DC on PBS. It was quite moving, hearing the words of the veterans, the children who never met their fathers and the connections made to heal each other. Not many callings can service a better, more worthy, cause than to assist our men and women veterans in their times of need. Let's not forget those that wait at home, wondering if their loved ones will return safely. Their reasons for serving are many and varied but one thing remains the same; pride of country.
I salute every member of all our service branches and their families who sacrifice with them while they are gone.
