Chapter 7
Ashley shivered. It was five in the morning and she couldn't sleep. Instead, her eyes were wide open and she was curled up into a tight ball. She pulled the blankets closer and her knees up to her chest. She was extremely worried. Kyoko still hadn't called and Keito refused to answer he phone calls. Where on earth was she? What happened? Just as if on cue, Ashley's thoughts were interrupted.
MY ALIEEEEEEEEEEN...
Ashley took out her pale hand and grabbed her phone.
"M-Moshi moshi?" Her voice cracked.
"A-Ashley?" No. Way.
"K-Kyoko?!" Ashley breathed into the mouth piece.
"G-Gomen..." Kyoko broke off and Ashley could hear her unsteady breathing.
"K-Kyoko, what's wrong? I've been worried sick! Ever since your mom called--"
"DON'T!" Kyoko shrieked. Ashley was shocked that such a pained sound was able to escape her best friend's lips.
"Nande...?"
"Eto...I-I just don't want to see...H-HEAR of that woman e-ever again." Ashley's grip tightened.
"Kyoko, I'm always here ne. You can tell me." Kyoko gave a sigh.
"Un, demo, it's best if I tell you in person."
"Where are you? I'll come!"
"No, no, it's okay. Besides, it's five in the morning. Don't 'cha think your parents will imagine a burglar trying to get in the house?"
"Yeah, only difference is that that 'burglar' is going out. I could always sneak--"
"No. I'll tel you, just not now." Ashley sighed in defeat.
"Fine, At least tell me where you are!" There was a short pause before Kyoko answered.
"Umm...Okay, but DON'T jump to any conclusions!" Ashley couldn't help it. Curiosity kills.
"Just spit it out!"
"Okay okay. I'm uhh...I'I'm at Keito's place." Ashley forgot to breathe. She almost dropped the phone.
"H-Hello?"
"Y-You...Keito...gaaaah..."
"ASHLEY! NO NO JUMPY TO CONCLUSIONS!" Ashley gasped.
"But...KEITO?!"
"What? I had to get out of my house and it started raining..."
"Well you COULD have come to MY house!"
"But I was a milion blocks further from your house. I honestly didn't know where I was going then I just thought of Keito." All Ashley could do was splutter. Kyoko let out a soft giggle.
"Gosh Ashley. You are the biggest fail." Ashley let out a reluctant laugh.
"Whatever. At least now I can sleep peacefully. But if I have nightmares of my best friend getting screwed over..."
"ASHLEY!"
"Fine fine! I'm shutting up!"
"Loser! Anyways, I'll call you up tomorrow. Ja!"
"Sa-ya-NO-ra!" Ashley chimed and hung up. It felt like the world had just been lifted from her shoulders. But she knew that Kyoko had yet to tell her the reason behind it all.
Keito...
"Ohayo!" Keito sat up groggily. He rubbed his eyes and refocused them at his doorway.
"Nani...?"
"Hey Keito!" Kyoko said brightly. She appeared to be carrying a tray in her arms.
"W-What is this?"
"Breakfast in bed." She said simply and placed the tray on his side table and sat on the edge of his bed and smiled.
"Thanks Keito. I owe you." Keito laughed softly and shook his head.
"It's alright, really."
"Un, still, I feel like I owe you anyway. Oh, and your mom is so kind. She looked uncomfortable at first, but when I served her the pancakes she cheered up and said I was welcome anytime! Imagine that!" Kyoko said perkily while Keito was taken aback.
"Eeh?" Kyoko just smiled.
"Ne, don't worry about it. Just eat your breakfast okay?"
"H-Hai..." Kyoko got up and turned to go but Keito caught her at the wrist.
"Wait!" Kyoko's cheeks suddenly went crimson.
"Y-Yeah?" Keito paused for a second.
"A-Arigatou Kyoko." Kyoko opened her mouth and closed it again. She gave a small nod and smiled. Keito finally let go of her wrist and she stumbled through the doorway. She doesn't know how much I meant that...
Ryosuke
"Hmm, I wonder what Ashley's up to..."
"Ugh, YAMA-CHAN! Just call her already! You've been asking the same question over a MILLION times in the past FIVE minutes!" Yuto said exasperated.
"B-But she sonded irritated o-or confused. I don't know! I haven't had a proper conversation with her in TWO days!" Yuto rolled his eyes.
"Then CALL her. Meet UP with her. Just TALK to the girl so I can concentrate for once in my life!" Yuto let out a puff of air and glared at Ryosuke. Ryosuke just sighed.
"Fine...But if she's mad at me, it's all YOUR fault..."
"Yeah yeah yeah..." Ryosuke grabbed the phone and began dialing.
"Moshi moshi? Ashley?" He began tentively. Soon, his eyes brightened up.
"Sure! I'll be there in 10! Ja!" Ryosuke uttered a small giggle and skipped towards the door.
"I'll be back after a bit!" He closed the door behind him leaving Yuto shaking his head.
At Ashley's...
Ashley quickly got dressed and looked out her window. There, she saw Ryosuke standing with his back faced towards the house. What a perfect opportunity to surprise him. She knew that Kyoko was probably taking her time since she was coming down with Keito, so what the heck. Ashley slowly opened her door, careful to avoid the squeaking of the door hinges. She crept up behind Ryosuke who was staring off into space and slowly placed her hands on his eyes, coming from behind.
"Guess who!" She giggled. Ryosuke was surprised at first but he soon got the gist. He gently took Ashley's wrists and slowly took them off and spun her around to face him. He then quickly let go of her wrists but before she could step back, he wrapped both his arms around her waist pulling her close.
"I missed you..." It was Ashley's turn to be caught off guard, but she recovered quickly as well. She poked his nose.
"Kawaii. I missed you too! You work to hard, have I ever told you that?" He smiled apologetically and gave her a small squeeze.
"Well, I'm here now!" Ashley laughed and they slowly pulled apart. Ryosuke gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before sweeping her off her feet.
"Uwaa!"
"It's okay! I gotcha!" Ashley nodded but nevertheless, she clung to him and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. He just smiled and began to dance and sway. Ashley laughed.
"You're such a weirdo!" Ryosuke gave her another kiss on the nose.
"And you are adorable." Ashley rolled her eyes. Little did they know that they had just gained a small audience.
"KAWAII!" Ryosuke stopped moving and snapped his head towards the end of the driveway. There, he saw Keito and Kyoko standing there hand in hand, fingers linked.
"Wow Yama-chan, who knew you actually carried other people! I always thought it was the other way around." Keito said innocently. Kyoko giggled and Ashley let out a hearty laugh.
"Well Keito, I just happen to be special like that!" Keito grinned and Kyoko rolled her eyes but smiled.
"Oi, Kyoko. I still need to talk to you ne." Kyoko heaved a sigh.
"Yeah I know. I will. Just not now okay? It's happy time now!" Ashley grimaced and Kyoko giggled. Ryosuke caught Keito's eyes and Keito shook his head ever so slightly. Ryosuke's curiosity was a lot to handle but he managed.
"Let's go you guys! I wanted to treat you all out," Then he looked at Keito.
"Of course, if Mr. Gentleman would like to pay for his Ms. Gentlewoman then that's fine with me..." He smirked and Keito scowled.
"I was planning on paying. But if you insist. I'll just order as much as I can for my 'gentlewoman' and you pay." They all laughed and Ryosuke pouted.
"Shoot. I'm gonna go broke. If I get put into a cardboard box, it'll be on your conscience Keito!"
"Whatever you say dude!" Keito was already preoccupied in wrapping an arm around Kyoko's waist.
At the restaurant...
"Table for four please,"
"Right this way, uh, sir." The waitress looked uncertainly at the four of them but lead them to a small booth nonetheless.
"Ne, this is cozy!" Ashley exclaimed.
"Hai! Oooo, pretty light..." Kyoko and Ashley looked up at the ceiling towards the dangling lamp. Keito laughed and poked Kyoko's cheek.
"Weirdo." Ryosuke laughed and tickled Ashley in the stomach.
Daiki...
"Table for two please. He's paying." Daiki jabbed his thumb behind him and the waitress looked up and blushed.
"O-Oh. Well, r-right this way t-then..." Jun smiled and placed a hand on the waitress' shoulder.
"Arigatou." The waitress stumbled on her way to a table across a small booth. Daiki rolled his eyes.
"You've GOT to stop doing that. Although, we could get free food like this..." Jun poked his cheek.
"You've got to stop that! People will think I'm a bad influence and then we WON'T get any free meals!" Daiki grinned. Their conversation was interrupted by a loud snort. Daiki turned to look at the small booth where the noise had come from. What he saw almost made him fall out of his chair.
"YAMA-CHAN?!" The group of four teenagers stopped and looked at Daiki and Jun. Then, there as a loud shriek.
"KYAAAAAAA! JUN-KUN!!!!!" In a second, Ashley had appeared at Jun's feet, smiling up eagerly. Jun laughed and patted her head like a dog.
"Kawaii!" Then he looked up at Ryosuke.
"That's one cute girlfriend you got there." Ryosuke grinned.
"Yeah, well, best be careful, the owner gets a tad jealous sometimes." Jun laughed as Ashley went to the familiar fetal position rocking back and forth giggling. Little did anyone know, Daiki had his fists curled up into a ball, his nails digging into his palms.
~
"So then, me and Keito just stood there trying NOT to laugh. But it was ADORABLE!" Kyoko gushed and Keito just watched her with a small smile. Daiki was irritated, he didn't know why, but he just was.
"Well, whatever, you should've just kept on walking ne." Kyoko looked abashed but quickly got over it.
"Whatever, Yama-chan's paying anyway. Aren't you Yama-chan?" She grinned towards Ryosuke who rolled his eyes.
"Yeah yeah. I'm paying! Jeez." Kyoko laughed and Jun smiled.
"I could always pay--"
"NOOO NOO it's okay Jun-kun! Hehehehehe..." Ashley clung on to Jun's arm and Ryosuke poked her cheek.
"Ne, Ashley, calm down."
"Hehehehehehe..." Jun just laughed again.
"It's okay Ryo-chan. Looks like your girlfriend has taken a liking to me. I don't mind much to be honest." Ryosuke grinned but Daiki stabbed his steak with so much force that his fork clanged against the glass plate. No one seemed to notice so he continued to poke at his food. Jun looked at Daiki but decided not to say anything. Not yet anyway.
"Hey listen, I've gotta go," He turned to Daiki who was still stabbing bits of steak.
"Dai-chan, you coming?" Daiki looked up with blank eyes.
"Sure." The group waved at them and Jun waved back. Daiki just kept on walking.
