Mika sat, arms folded, her dark eyes staring at nothing in particular. Her light brown hair fell into loose curls, her bangs creating an arch above her eyelids. Her mouth was a bit open, giving the impression that she was deep in thought.
Across the room sat Hikaru, also staring, but at the girl with dark brown eyes and light brown hair. Her arms were folded delicately whereas his were slumped over on the table. Her lips were slightly parted and his was wide open. These two very different people sat in the same cafe, both deep in thought. Mika did not realize that her biggest crush was in the same room as her and staring. She had given up on him after trying hard to drop many hints.
Hikaru, however, was oblivious to any of these hints and he tried to be subtle. Acting all calm and cool whenever she was around. Alas, this didn't work out too well. She doesn't know how he feels and he doesn't know how she feels. Then, a waitress came up to him.
"Sir, if you aren't going to buy anything, I'm going to have to ask you to step out." Hikaru looked up, not daring to look at Mika; She might've noticed! How stupid would he look? He had to think fast. He took a quick scan around and the small menu in front of him caught his eye.
"O-Oh, gomen. I'll have a mango bubble tea please!" The waitress bowed and walked away. Phew! That was close. But he didn't look up at Mika, but just stared off into space.
Mika was still staring blankly at the opposite wall when a waitress came up to her.
"Miss, if you aren't planning on buying anything, I'm going to have to ask you to leave." Oh shoot. Ugh, I'm gonna make a fool outta myself... She didn't know what to say. She blanked out. Hikaru noticed and let his adrenaline take over and he fast walked towards Mika.
"It's okay Ma'am. She's also having mango." The waitress looked at Mika and Hikaru indifferently and broke into a smile.
"Hai. Your orders are coming up!" She turned to walk away, leaving Mika and Hikaru in an awkward silence.
"Thanks." Mika mumbled, afraid to look up. Her face felt hot.
"No prob." Hikaru answered and slowly turned, determined to make it out alive.
"Ne," Mika said loudly. Hikaru stopped and turned back.
"Un?"
"W-Wanna sit?" She gestured to the seat in front of her.
"Uhh, sure..." He sat down awkwardly and began drumming his fingers on the table. Both were thinking wildly about their luck! Now all they had to do was say something. Mika sighed and Hikaru blew out.
"Hey--" They started.
"No, you first." They overlapped again.
"No, really--" At this point, they were both grinning and Hikaru obliged.
"Ladies first." Mika smiled but blushed because she was thinking about what she had to say.
"Well, in this case...It's actually more...courteous if the guy goes first..." Hikaru didn't get the gist.
"N-Nani...?" Mika gulped.
"Eto...I-I mean...I-I..." She choked back her words and suddenly Hikaru understood.
"Oh! Mika-chan..." She looked up with worried eyes and he smiled.
"Mika-chan...I-I...I like you...A-A lot." He managed to say. To his surprise Mika giggled.
"What's so funny?" Mika shrugged and held Hikaru's hand. Hikaru felt a small tingle at the place where Mika was touching her flesh with his.
"Your hand was shaking. It looked like a tremor..." They looked into each other's eyes and knew that this was just perfect.
"Here are your mango milk bubble teas! Enjoy!" The waitress whispered to Hikaru, "It's on the house!" She turned and walked away. Hikaru looked at Mika who grinned.
"Arigatou Hika-chan."
"Oh, so now we start the nicknames eh? Haha, fine, Mii-chan!" They laughed and linked their fingers together and drank their bubble tea. Soon, they were walking together, Hikaru's arm snaked around Mika's waist, talking animatedly. They then reached a small clearing that overlooked a small lake.
"Uwaa, the sunset's so pretty!" Mika breathed. Hikaru wrapped his arms around her torso and rested his chin on the top of her head. She rested her arms on his and laid her head on his chest.
"It took you long enough Hika-chan..."
"What do you mean?"
"What I mean is that does it really take bubble tea to get you to say something? I was dying!" Hikaru chuckled at her exaggeration and turned her around so that they were now facing each other.
"Let's just say that I'm very grateful for the bubble tea ne." Mika smirked.
"Why mango?" Hikaru stepped closer.
"Because it's sweet, and it has the color of a bright sunset." He whispered and leaned in. To him, he had just gotten the sweetest and brightest thing in the world.
