If it went out of switzerland, I am assuming it was sent by chronopost? if so, they can verify the condition which would only leave parcel force to blame.
Also, it's never acceptable to just chuck something somewhere because it can't be delivered. Even if it's not a signed for item (parecel force usually is), they can't just leave it with a note and go. They have to keep it and attempt re-delivery or leave a note telling you to arrange somthing with them, either you picking it up or them coming back. But not throwing it outside. It's a courrier service, not pigeon mail.
If they refuse to take responsibility for damaging it and you don't wanna argue with them about that, they most definitely can't weasel out of the leaving it in a cupboard bit.
