Next Sunday, January 22, 2006, I am leaving for Dakar, Senegal. With this journal, I'll keep you all up to date with my day to day adventures in West Africa. Of course I will still send you all letters and emails but this way offers more instant gratification for those of you dying to know what I've been up to.
Now we are in the final stages of preparing for takeoff. I get about 5 emails every day for the other people in my group. "Do I really need bugspray?" "Is anyone else taking an ipod?" This is going to be interesting...
Spent $180 at the PharmaPlus today buying all the crap I need. Sunscreen and antidiarrheal anyone? Thankfully I have almost everything I need now for 4 months in the jungle...Well, sort of.
So, some facts about Senegal that I should probably memorize before I leave. (Seriously, isn't the World Factbook the coolest thing ever? Who's idea was it? At least the CIA is doing something useful.)
Republique du Senegal:
Location: West Africa, between Mauritania and Guinea-Bissau.
Population: 11,126,832
HIV/AIDS adult prevalence rate: 0.8%
Cheif of state: President Abdoulaye Wade
Official language: French
Disclaimer: I have no idea how often I will get a chance to update this once I've over there. If you want to get in touch, email is still the most reliable.
