Why do you participate in fandom?
Because I love the characters, and wish for more background (even though it's not completely true).
Japanese aritists hold my attention more than American artists.
The characters of FMA are very "real" in that they have multifacted psyches, and they feel like they have whole lives that go on even when Ed and Al aren't around.
Because where else would I look for other people who are learning Mando'a?
Because I like it and I wanna read/view fanwork and support the fandom.
i love it :)
Because I love that particular anime/manga
Because I love imagining different scenarios not explored in the text.
I like the stories.
fandom is the ultimate indie art community. plus, free reading material!
Because it's a way to share my creative vibes
Why would someone read a good book, or look at good art? It's the same reason, but the works in question build off other people's worlds.
Because I love arashi!
Also becaue I wish to improve my writing. Writing fanfics means that I get reviews and feedback from a great variety of people
It's something that starts off as just being "interesting" but after being in fandom long enough, it becomes something that can consume your mind and soul.
Because it's fun.
I really enjoy well written fanfiction and different interpretations of the characters
I don't want to leave this 'world' behind. JKR didn't write enough, and some fanfics are amazingly good with the characterizations.
In real life, I know perhaps one or two people who have a smidgen of the same interest in something I do.
to learn japanese
SASUKE! <3
Recreation, stress relief
There are a suprisingly large number of very creative & talented individuals involved in the various fandoms I follow. Many are superior writers to the professional (paid) version.
Because I simply love the boys~ :3
because I love my fandom, it's characters and the stories being written
Because it is a better way to learn more about your favorite celebrity(s)
to explore my creativity, to improve writing skills and language command
It caters to whims not represented elsewhere, or that you can't get in your country/region.
becasue of slash :)
There are also some VERY smart people in the fandom
When I am a fan of someone/thing I go crazy for it with fandom!!!
I love it =]
Mmmmmmm, fanfiction.
To be a part of a community
I read/write/create/use yuri/yaoi/slash (homosexual) fan-things because:
It's also canon, and it can equalize power dynamics in a way het doesn't.
It's different from the normal, boring life routines.
the male characters are simply more interesting
it turns me on
I find same sex relationship to be an interesting change from heterosexual romance, which the mainstream media is saturated with
I'm bisexual.
becase het fics are more likely to be Mary-Sues
it's different than het
It opens my mind.
I really like yaoi/yuri and There is nothing wrong with it!
slash is fun and sexy. Haven't you noticed that straight kids are far more likely to be interested in slash?
I tend to dislike female characters in animes/mangas
It's much hotter than hetero-stuff ever will be.
well, you see, in Prince of Tennis, there's only guys...8D
If I think the couple is interesting and has good dynamics, I'll support them, be it heterosexual or homosexual.
It's hot.
Sometimes, because it follows cannon!
I'm bi - (a lot of fen I know identify as bi too, so...)
Comment on the last two questions... it is not R rated... PG as in...holding hands etc
It explores the dynamic of characters I like and their interac tions
I love the pairings.
it's hot.
It's hot!
and because it's change the done. and cause sasunaru is basically canon lol.
No difference whether it's slash or het, as long as I find the characters compatible.
Its hot
It's hot!
I'm not sure really... the first fic I ever read was yaoi, so I think it just went on from there. I hadn't thought about it before reading the fic (which was sent to me by a friend I trust on these matters), but boy am I glad I did!
I don't, unless it is canon.
Some yaoi couples are just so cute together, you can't help it.
Sakuraiba
Because I feel that there is a very strong gay subtext between Harry and Draco in the canon, and it's interesting to see how writers in the fandom expand upon it. Also, for me it's not a gender thing, it's about OTP :) Canon Ginny and Harry's interaction reads as fake. His (again, still canon) interaction with Draco, on the otherhand, is always very intense and feels more geniune.
Why not?
I just like them! And they are sexy.
Love is indiscriminate
I find the pairing dynamics interesting, regardless of the characters' sex
It tends to be more intricate than hetero relationships.
It's interesting to see how some writers can keep the characters true to the canon in almost any situation, including unlikely sexual pairings.
Like any alternative het shipping, you can create interesting and often very amazing pairings.
There isn't much difference from het-related fan-things. I treat them as the same material.
I like the pairings!
slash is hotter than het. by far.
I just love yaoi.
There's no gender limitation this way. (Besides, the authors/mangakas do it too.)
Because even in Canon there is Yaoi.
it's hot.
It's not like heterosexual where's there that big sex difference from each other
I don't.
My friend writes it
because its sexy ;)
it's just too good to be missed
Sometimes it makes sense.
It expands different focuses, has more problems involved than just heterosexual-only things. And it's more fun. =D
Because it's part of life and as such it deserves to be written
Does it really matter what gender the people are? Feelings are feelings.
I see it not because it is homo or whatever, but because of the characters themselves. ^__^ I don't see these things solely because of its sexual orientation, in general, I don't mind if it's yaoi or het (not really yuri) if I find it worthwhile.
Because Ohmiya ftw.
The characters that appeal to me as a pair just happen to be of the same gender
I'm the webmaster of a fanfic site and I read about all the fics featured on it for admin purposes
as an asexual I find it easier to relate to as a non-normative sexuality
I like romances, but find male/female romances boring
I'm a fan of the pairing
More interesting than het.
It allow an exploration of issues that are untouchable in heterosexual relationships.
It allows me to imagine characters I enjoy in different variation of themselves
Anything character driven, and IN character I like.
Some fandom characters are gay.
Because Hikaru and Akira are an old married couple at freakin 12. (And Sasuke/Naruto is hot. eheh.)
It's fun!
I don't
kaiwaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
It can follow canon.
I'm bi (I took this before but forgot to mention this)
I see chemistry between the (few) characters I slash, and want to explore that relationship
Frankly, it was better written at fanfiction.net than most of the het.
I don't read/write/create those things.. o.o
...
IT'S SO CANON xD
I like to show my support of homosexual identity.
something about the emotional dynamics between same sex members - such as interaction between 2 male members of a relationship - just isn't the same in het.
I do NOT read/write/create/use yaoi/yuri/slash (homosexual) fan-things because:
because girls are hot too ;D
I do. :D
no comment
I do read them
I do it.

I don't read any slash that is just there for the sake of slash.
I read.
Simply I don't like it
no, really, it's hot.
I'm not that interested in making my fandom sexual at all, especially if the original characters weren't paired that way.
I think most sexual applicaton in fandom is silly.
Kinda awkward...
You forgot 'it's not canon'. I mean, if you wanted to make a case for Luke, knock yourself out. But Han seems pretty damn hetero to me, and not like to experiment much with guys. So writing Han slash isn't going impress me, y'know?
time restraints
Just don't like to.
When the celebs in the fan-things have not said that they are homosexual, then it just feels creepy reading it.
My religion doesn't believe in it, but the reason I don't deal with it is usually because it's not canon.
I really find it disrespectful, especially when there's real people (such as a band) involved
I read it.
N/A
I do read it
It's probably not my OTP if I don't read it.
Because I don't like the couples.....not because they are gay
i'm rather secretive about it that's all
I approve of it~
No, I'm pro human rights.
interested in a character, not relationships
I think it's poor to create such things around REAL people. I do the anime shit to varying degrees, but I don't think it's right to do such things about REAL people.
I don't write much in the way of sex scenes to start with, but homosexual stuff...well, it's just too improbable for the characters to be attracted to each other that way, given their canon relationship and psyches.
N.A.
I totally love slash
I don't specifically avoid it, and it doesn't bother me, I just rarely read it because it's not canon and it rarely has any fantasy connection in me. Writing hetero characters as homosexual is akin to writing homosexual characters as straight
BISEXUAL [Edited for profanity]
i don't like this question
No, I read it
Doesn't apply mostly? Depends on the WRITING
because girls are hot too ;D
I do. :D

No, I read it
Doesn't apply mostly? Depends on the WRITING
I read/write/create/use het (heterosexual-oriented) fan-things because:
Depends on what kind of people the man and women are that determine my interest.
because the whole world is not gay and it just isnt realistic to me when a story has all gay couples
Sometimes it makes sense too.
Same reason as above. It's part of life
I rarely do this and when I do, it's because I really think that the pair has a certain chemistry.
Again, does it really matter what gender the people are?
Again, it depends on the characters in the pairing itself, not simply because it's het. XD
The characters that appeal to me as a pair just happen to be of the opposite gender
Same as above
just cos there isn't any homosexual fandoms I'm in
Because it's cute?
I'm a fan of the pairing
It creates more options for plot/drama when exploring all sorts of pairings.
Because most 'fan-things' are written/created as homosexual, heterosexual is no longer the norm. This is especially noticible in writing. Readers seek for something beyond 'normal' heterosexual stories, forcing the writer to become more creative in order to satisfy their readers. (applying to Japanese idol fandom)
I prefer het fiction to be strong on plot, because the characters more closely follown the original canon.
Some fandom characters are straight.
Follows canon MOST of the time. I read plenty of het that would never be in canon.
-_- Boring but...I dunno, it's more available.
I don't
my het fandom is about 5%
I don't, especially in HP fandom.
I see chemistry between the characters, and want to express it
I do like some of the pairing just because... they're there and they're cute.
I dont.
....
I don't :p
I rarely do, but don't discount it.
Same as above.
Only because I exclusively read works by authors I know to be good at their craft. Too much other crap out there that I don't touch unless has been recommended.
I do NOT read/write/create/use het (heterosexual-oriented) fan-things because:
Doesn't apply.
It's manipulating and using people's images to serve your own sexual desires . . . it's just wrong
I read it.
I do readwrite/create/use it
same as 11.
I sometimes read it.
I do read het but I still think slash is more fun. Feel free to disregard the ticky box.
interested in character, not relationships
I find it very disturbing how people can think of these things.
I generally avoid het in SJ series because are too conventional/cliche-ridded
because I love fandom? =X
I think sex is used as a substitute for real character development and plot sometimes. I just don't find the barnyard dance all that interesting, and the endless contrived misunderstandings make me grit my teeth.
I disagree with creating het for the sake of het rather than looking at how the characters interact with each other.
N.A.
Because I'm not interested in het fan-thing at all
another question I can do without
Depends on who wrote it
i don't not... musn't discriminate, now...
I do, so this question does not really apply.
Why have a girl when two boys will do just fine?
But I do, too. XD
I'm leaving this question blank since I believe love is unconditional in every sense of that word
Can't really find an interesting het pairing
i'm not as interested in canon pairings
na
I find characters have a tendency to be one-dimensional
I like the interaction between my favorite characters when they are together as a couple
i do

I don't really find it in my fandom.

It's BORING.
same as #11

Less exciting because it's ordinary (what happens most of the time to most of the people in the entire world)
???
It isn't really in canon. Except if you count Mitani and that volleyball girl.
I'm above the idea that love is limited to physical things. Physically is just how you express you love/lust/etc. I don't think it's right to be weighed down by that.
I like general stories. No pairings.
Any other thoughts from fandom?
