Long time lurker, possibly first time commenter. I know I owe you a long-ass reply to your long-ass e-mail ages ago, but I rarely have time to sit down and talk. (Hence the lack of updates in my own Livejournal, as well.)
But this is something I agree with you completely on, and I noticed myself that a transformation took place after I had lost weight--where suddenly all the people in Canada were FAT. (And trust me, when I went back in August, this was my main observation---why is it, that while I struggle every day to maintain my healthy weight of 52kg, that these canadians are eating so much sugar/fat/fast food, and wearing short shorts and FLAUNTING their cellulite and stretchmarks?)
I came to roughly the same conclusion as you did. My life in Japan is stressful, shallow, skin deep. Japan - Glam, but in Canada the people are friendly, and comfortable, and FREE. I remember in August we were in a hicktown, and this fat sweaty man approached my mother and I, and I judged him immediately based upon his garbled appearance. But he smiled and started a conversation with my mother and I, a friendly general conversation. When he walked away, I thought "what a friendly, genuinely nice guy!"
In Japan it's not like that. It's never like that. I live in hicksville, Kyushu and it's never like that.
I was seeing a Japanese boy for awhile, and he told me I was cute--but that I would be perfect if I were 49 Kg. At my worst, I've been 50kg--so unhealthy that I needed to be hospitalized. At 51kg, my BMI is 17, which is "malnourished", apparently. 52 is the lowest I can go and still be healthy, and it's STILL not good enough for Japanese men.
There are many things I love about Japan, but there are many reason why I think that this journey will be my last. Come graduation, I think It'll be time to throw in the towel and head back from whence I came...
