Looking at the research pics

Jun 08, 2011 21:25

Was looking at the journal entry that has the pics for the project before heading to bed, and looking at the ruff monkeys, one of them is wearing a doublet with a curved front (I can see shadow hatching under her breast). I think I want to make a matching doublet for this kirtle eventually, so no red dress for my daughter.

I also note that some images the back of the gowns have a few pleats, possibly a few large ones, but not many pleats. Other pics, there is a slight gather or minimal fullness in the back, like in this image of the lady in red with her back to us. I guess if I want to have enough to go over the farthingale, I'll need to used circular skirts like in Alcega.

Also was reminded of this particular link earlier today, about how much fabric was actually used by women in the 16th century for their garments. Really worth reading and remembering, as re-enactors and especially ren-faire folks tend to overdo the amount of fabric they use in their garments.
http://www.nachtanz.org/SReed/fabuse.html (is that fabuse=fab.use or =f.abuse??? - don't mind me I is sslleeeps deprvd)

And I need to find the fabric for the farthingale, as that must get made first. At least I've got the steels for that already. Or should I make an obvious farthingale kirtle skirt, like what appears in this image? Thankfully, I have a pattern to use for the farthingale, too.

Decisions, decisions... off to go sleep on them.
