I was reacting to the promo for next week, the one that played immediately after the episode. In the promo, we saw Stefan lambasting Damon for the fact that he took "full advantage" of the sire bond, and Damon looking abashed. Like I said, I'm hoping for the "didn't know" interpretation, but the "took full advantage" bit made it seem like the other. Maybe it was just Stefan being a dick to make his brother feel worse than he already does.
As for Stefan and Jeremy, I honestly got the impression that all the people "in the know" about the whole hunter thing (Stefan, Damon, Matt, Klaus, Jeremy, Shane, etc.) knew that the hunter would have a stronger and stronger urge to kill vampires, increasing with each vampire he killed -- I remember it being discussed explicitly -- but it seemed like Stefan just *chose* to believe that this homicidal urge magically wouldn't apply to Elena, or to himself, or to any of Jeremy's other vamp buddies, even as it grew worse and worse as Stefan encouraged/forced him to kill more and more. I mean really ... what did he think was going to happen? Jeremy (or Stefan) would be able to harness the serial killer urges indefinitely, until they could finish the mark and save Elena? When Stefan was doing all this *against* Jeremy's will? In this episode, Stefan *forced* Jeremy to kill, under great duress, for his own purposes. I found that pretty darn evil, actually, trying to turn someone into an incurable serial killer (for the rest of Jeremy's *life*, since it only gets worse, as far as we know, until you eventually just become a mindless vamp-killing machine, if you live that long) so you can help a girlfriend who wouldn't even want you to do it if she knew.
Ahem. Yes, I guess I have strong opinions about Stefan's behavior in this episode. Don't mind me. Rant over. :)
