it's actually historically supposed to be "you can't eat your cake and have it, too". it pretty much means you can't have everything your way. you can either have this beautiful piece of cake that you show off to people, or you can eat it, enjoy it, and wallow in the fact that it means nothing to anyone but you now.
see, that's good. they didn't have that technology in 18th century Paris. you're moving on up (to the east side). good thinking.
i hope i didn't sound like a know it all. i hate know it alls. the only things i know are pointless, like what "you can't have your cake and eat it too" means, so i don't often get a chance to help people out with it.
