Civil union. Domestic partnership. Marriage. I've got plenty of thoughts on marriage. The first being that I am legally denied what so many United States citizens take for granted. There are divorces and annulments handed out left and right in this country and yet we must protect the sacred act of marriage.
Here's a thought: why in the hell is marriage so sacred?
The last time I checked, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Canada were all doing very well with their same-sex marriage laws. They weren't swallowed up into space as soon as the ink dried. We're supposed to be the "A1" of the world and here we are, in 2006, denying millions of people the right to legalize their partnership, their love, their commitment to one another. What the hell is that?
Giving same-sex couples the same marriage rights as heterosexuals would not only wipe away the obvious discrimination of homosexuals; it would, quite frankly, make life a hell of a lot easier. I should not have to be separated from my partner at the door of the emergency room. I also should not have to take a backseat to some distant relative when it comes to making her medical decisions or post-mortem arrangements-and that’s just the beginning.
There are currently over 1,000 benefits of marriage that same-sex couples do not receive with a domestic partnership, so do I have thoughts on marriage? About a thousand of them.
