A Different Dialect From Another Color

Dec 14, 2004 19:45

Today I walked outside to go for a run. The time was 8:28 am and the sky was the color of green. I started on my way through the yellow trees and decided to take the longer path today. The water looked unusually grey but I just shrugged it off. This path was more windy than the others. It would veer left then turn sharply to the right; up and down and up and down. I finally turned left one more time and it came to an end. A little confused, I stumbled through what used to be the path to see where it went to. I crawled through the brush and discovered a cave, a well, and a cabin. I have never seen anything like this before.

With a puzzled look I made my way to the well and looked down. Never have I seen a deeper hole. I looked around for something to toss down and hear for an estimation of distance. I found a rock a little bit smaller than a baseball and dropped it in. It suddenly stopped in midair and the hole shook violently. Confusion got the best of me so I reached down and grabbed the rock and found out what happened. Instead of pulling out the rock, I pulled out a deep hole. I looked back to where I picked it up from and there was just a patch of grass. It was a perfectly painted portrait of a life size well; about 36" by 32". I put it aside and turned my head toward the cabin.

With colors of blue and orange, I felt a little uneasy about what was inside. It seemed to be a basic log cabin, despite the colors of course. With logs stacked upon each other, typical roof with a chimney for a steeple. Smoke lifted into the clouds; someone was home. Who lives all the way out here next to a cave? Believe it or not, I worked up the courage and approached the shady building.

I tried to be quite as I snuck over to the window. I wanted to peek through just to see what's inside before I do anything else. I couldn't help but snap so many sticks and twigs. My pours were drenched with sweat. My adrenaline started to speed up. I felt very overwhelmed excitement coming from this cabin. My breathing started to increase as fast as my heart beat. I finally got to the window after what seemed like forever and peered inside.

I ran as far as I could until I hit the end of the cavern. I saw the shadow of it creeping closer but slowly. It was only around the corner now. I had to imagine a plot fast before I became a funeral. I decided to hide behind one of the larger stalagmites and only hoped that it couldn't smell my fear. I looked frantically around me and searched for a stick or a rock; anything to strike it with. Without even a notice, I discovered a well lit pond that seemed deep enough to hide in. "How did I miss that?!", I thought to myself. I immediately crawled into the water and dove deep beneath the surface.

To my surprise, I could see, and it seemed like this cave was deeper than I imagined. The water tasted different, too, like a sulfuric kinda taste...but it wasn't. I had a good feeling that this water connected at some point to the lake I passed next to the path. I went up one more time for a big gulp of air; I saw it's face. It was the most horrifying sight that I've ever seen. It was hard to say if it was an animal or human, but regardless, it was on all fours. It seemed to have fur, but patches of hair were missing throughout its body. It had a semi-tail that just curled around its backside. Its face was so gruesome, that the detail was too perfect to picture. The circumference of the left eye was 3 inches around; a perfect circle, with no trace of an eyebrow. The right eye was the shape of an oval, 1 inch wide with no upper eyelid. Its mouth was not horizontal, but instead a vertical shape that opened from left to right. The teeth were grotesque, because that was the only clear perfect human trait. It had no apparent nose that I saw, and it made a terrifying noise when we came face to face.

Without hesitation, I dove straight back under and got out as quick as possible trying to find an opening to another cave or lake. The water for the most part was clean, with the exception of the color. I swam fast yet with caution through the seemingly endless cavern. I felt my lungs choked a bit; I needed air. My heart started to race as I kicked through the water. I felt my arms starting to go numb...and then my legs. I wasn't going to make it, I couldn't find air anywhere. I turned my head back towards where I came in. That thing was swatting at the water. There didn't seem to be much hope for me as I swam frantically. I finally came to a point where the waterways split into three paths. On one of the paths, the walls were painter orange. Another path was painted purple. The last was painted white. I made my decision and pushed hard for it.

I didn't make it. I tried for the white room and failed. As soon as my body entered the painted walls, I let go of my lungs and gave in to the water. I could feel the water rush through my mouth and down my windpipe. I felt it swirl around in my lungs as I closed my eyes. I felt so light headed. I looked up and saw a bright light high up in the Heavens. I let out a sigh of relief when I saw that light. "I can finally go 'home'", I thought to myself. At that point I opened my eyes and became shocked with what I discovered. The water was so light in its components that I could actually breathe in the environment. As feeling returned to my body, I felt like my life was anew. I continued through the white room so I could get out and go home.

Down the tunnel, it began to decrease in size. I started to worry, but now that I was breathing fine, it didn't bother me that much. As I neared the end of the line, I realized that the path didn't end, it just went up. I could see that there was light at the top of this path, as well! Seeing this, I laughed to myself and swam straight up. I didn't feel any sort of pressure to my lungs on the climb up. I finally made it to the light and it seemed like all that stopped me from freedon was a hatch left ajar. I pushed through, although heavy, it was not impossible. I got one arm through and squeezed the rest of myself through. After I got up and out, i got a good gasp of real air and it never felt better. I looked around to see where I came up and I saw the cabin was now in rubble. I looked to see where I came out of and it was the portrait of the well turned upside down. I could still hear that terrifying noise coming from the cave still. Hearing that sound again snapped a chill down my spine. I worked frantically on getting back on that path and running home.

The trees were no longer yellow and the sky was now blue, but the color of the water was now a pale white. I didn't care, I stayed on the path and headed back home. The pathed seemed to be soaked with water, too. It didn't look like it rained. It looked like the water was soaking through the ground to the surface. Still on the path, I tried not to think about the scenes that I just saw. I finally made it home.

I was exhausted. I could barely breathe because of that long run. I went inside and made some tea. Made it up, drank it up, then headed up the stairs to get ready to jump back into the bed. I looked at the sheets and saw that they were drenched in sweat. I noticed the time was still 8:28 am. I set my alarm and jumped back into the bed and fell right to sleep. Two minutes later my alarm went off and I jumped out of bed and turned it off. I got dressed, put my contacts in and went downstairs to have some tea. I stretched, then walked outside to go for a run.
