The first time they met was at a house party; it was the start of the new semester and everyone was feeling reckless. They both only knew one person, the one who’d invited them, and they were feeling particularly awkward as they wandered around. People tried to lure them into games or conversations or one night stands. But these fish weren’t biting. To be fair, Yukwon was the one people wanted to drink with, because he smiled and waved and high fived people he only barely knew from his classes at the college. And Minhyuk was…well he was Minhyuk, silent eye candy to be interested in but strangely unapproachable.

About halfway through the night, Jaehyo found Yukwon and dragged him into a back room with barely anyone in it. One of these people being Minhyuk. “Finally, I’ve been looking for you all night; I was scared you hadn’t shown.” Jaehyo grinned and shook his head as he led the red head across the room. Yukwon had been enjoying a particularly thrilling game of “I’ve never” and could only be dragged away by Jaehyo’s promise of, “I’ve found someone that I want you to meet. He’s simply gorgeous and absolutely perfect for you.”

The younger male was skeptical because there was no one right for him, let alone perfect but he agreed to the meeting anyways and let himself be dragged off to this quieter part of the house. When he saw the person Jaehyo was bringing him to, his eyes widened slightly. He’d only seen Minhyuk in passing, when walking through the halls or walking passed the dance studios meant for older students. Of course, he’d always absently found the other attractive but never would have imagined talking to him or anything of the sort. He flushed slightly at his train of thought and then offered a small smile when Jaehyo stopped walking and moved out of the way so he could make introductions.

“Minhyuk, this is Yukwon, a friend of mine from school. Kwonnie, this is Minhyuk, a classmate of mine.” Jaehyo smiled brightly and motioned for them to stand a little closer together, clapping his hands slightly and flashing them his thumb. “Okay, good luck, I have to go.” And just like that, the ulzzang prince of their school had left them to their own devices.

Yukwon awkwardly sipped his drink and scuffed his feet, not sure what to say. He almost wished he had refused Jaehyo and continued watching “I’ve never” but then it was probably good that he’d been dragged away, else he’d have been pulled into it. Biting his lip, he turned to the other and smiled, noticing the nervous flush on the older man’s cheeks. “Some party hey?” He laughed softly, glancing around the room and frowning, there were only a few people aside from them, couples that were too busy sucking face to care about much else.

“Ah… yeah, I only know Jaehyo so…” Minhyuk shrugged, finishing off his drink and setting the plastic cup down on a nearby table. “He ditched me once we got here until he found you…” Minhyuk laughed softly and shrugged; he hadn’t seen much besides this room, at one point there had been a television program on, but that had been turned off when the room had been made into first base central.

“Oh… I’ve seen you dancing at school…you’re really good.” Yukwon smiled; being a dancer himself he always admired others. “Maybe we should hang out some time, trade some moves?” He cocked his head slightly in question and Minhyuk found he was much like a puppy, eager to please. It wasn’t something he was used to.

“Yeah sure… but I’ve got to find the washroom… I’ll catch you later.” Minhyuk smiled awkwardly and then slipped away before Yukwon could get another word in edgewise.

And only the redhead realized that they hadn’t exchanged phone numbers.

The second time they met, it was Jaehyo’s graduation ceremony and banquet. By some stroke of luck, they’d been seated together and Yukwon was sure that Jaehyo had pulled some strings for that coincidence but he wasn’t complaining. It was possible he’d finally manage to get Minhyuk’s number from him. He’d tried since the party, but the other never seemed to notice when Yukwon called his name or knocked on the practice room doors so he’d eventually given up. He had the feeling that Jaehyo was playing cupid but he didn’t care, he wondered if Minhyuk thought the same thing, or maybe he was just paranoid.

Sitting at the ceremony was terrible; Yukwon couldn’t do anything but look at Minhyuk and vaguely wish he had declined his friend’s invitations. He was glad for Jaehyo, but this was practically torture. He couldn’t talk; he couldn’t do much else aside from sit and wiggle uncomfortably in his seat. He noticed Minhyuk glancing at him with a raised brow and perhaps a small smirk a few times but Yukwon tried to ignore it. At least after this it was dinner and not only that, but it was a dinner he didn’t have to pay for. Sue him for being cheap.

At dinner, they were again seated together with Jaehyo and another friend of theirs, Jiho, not too far away. It was only slightly less awkward then the party, probably because they, Yukwon mostly, weren’t already mostly drunk. The red head, because he was still going with the fiery color, smiled at Minhyuk, and mentioned something about not having been given the other’s number at the party. To which Minhyuk had practically beat himself up over.

“Sorry… I’d had a bad day and wasn’t feeling well. I didn’t mean to ditch you so soon. Though… I guess I hadn’t really had any intention of meeting you to be honest. Jaehyo kind of forced me into it.” He smiled sheepishly, picking at the too small portions of the not that great food.

Yukwon shook his head slightly and waved his hand through the air. “It’s okay; I didn’t really expect you to agree anyways...” He looked down at his food and pushed around the sticky potatoes, mixing them with the too salty gravy as he pouted to himself.

He didn’t expect Minhyuk’s hand on his leg or the other looking at him so desperately, his brows furrowed and eyes wide. “No, no, it really wasn’t that.” He laughed slightly though the sound was humorless and then continued, taking his hand back slowly. “I was actually not feeling well. I had to…” He grimaced and shook his head, obviously not wanting to repeat something so distasteful at the dinner table. Even if that dinner was also distasteful.

Yukwon laughed and shook his head, pushing away from the table slightly. “Hey, why don’t we go get something that’s actually food? I don’t know if I can keep pretending to eat this shit.” He cocked his head slightly and smiled when Minhyuk nodded, both of them getting up and saying goodbye to Jaehyo and Jiho before leaving the banquet hall.

Jaehyo looked at Jiho with a triumphant expression and tried to keep it even when he learned that all Minhyuk and Yukwon had done was go for dinner and go home. And it wasn’t even really dinner; it was street food and soju outside of the train station nearby.

The third time they met was at Jaehyo’s housewarming/Christmas party. He’d just moved into his own apartment and wanted to break it in and it was close enough to Christmas that it added another excuse to have a party.

Minhyuk was talking to Jiho, making up excuses for being late to the party as he took off his jacket and slipped his shoes off. He accepted a beer into his hand and took a grateful sip, it had been a tough day at practice and it was exactly what he’d needed. Shaking his head slightly, the blonde refused to make any more excuses, grinning as he was greeted by Jaehyo, a small present being slipped into his hand. He frowned at it before setting it with his coat, he’d open it when it actually was Christmas, even though Jaehyo was frowning at him and making it obvious that it was supposed to be opened now.

Sighing Jaehyo waved his hand through the air and went back to the party, slipping onto the couch and leaning against some guy wearing thick-rimmed square glasses and an ugly expression at having Jaehyo so close to him. Minhyuk could only assume he either didn’t like Jaehyo or was just not happy to be there. He vaguely remembered him as Jiho’s friend, Kyung, from New Zealand. Jiho had sat on his other side and smacked him upside the head before taking a drink and then Minhyuk turned his eyes away. He wasn’t much for people watching. Though he was disappointed to notice that he couldn’t find Yukwon in the crowd.

It was only a little later, they were all starting to become a little tipsy and Yukwon was running around to all the partygoers with a sprig of mistletoe above his head. He was drunk enough that he just wanted people to love him so he was getting everyone to kiss him on the cheek. Of course though he made sure not to get any from the same person twice. This went on until he came face to face with Minhyuk and he froze, the mistletoe hanging from limp fingers above his head and he forgot what to say.

With a small smirk curling his lips, dimple appearing in his cheek, Minhyuk leaned forward and pulled Yukwon in for a kiss. Somewhere in the back of his mind, Yukwon remembered he’d had a rule for no lips but then he supposed this was okay. He could handle Minhyuk kissing him on the lips. In fact, he was even kissing the older man back, mistletoe forgotten in his hand as he wrapped his arms around the other.

And from the couch Jaehyo made a whooping sound, turning to grin at Jiho. “See? I told you, the third time’s a charm!” He took his beer and banged it against the side of Jiho’s can before taking a large gulp and continuing to lean against Kyung.
