He’d known paradise once. Or at least, that’s what they’d called it then. It was a space all their own, to get away from real life, to get away from their parents, just anything really. They went as often as they could without being gone for too long. Of course, as children they’d thought they really weren’t going anywhere. That it was all in their imagination, that Minhyuk and him had some sort of super powers or something. What more did kids know right? At the tender ages of six and eight, not very much.
It started out innocent enough, they’d always been friends since they could remember. Their parent’s had been friends and neighbors and they’d met each other that way and had become fast friends. It hadn’t taken them long to find their ‘Paradise’, it being hidden beneath Minhyuk’s bed. After they discovered it they were there every day, any minute they could spare. And it always felt like they were there for days when they crawled back out, but really it was only ever a few hours. No one had ever noticed them missing before.
Underneath the bed was a whole new world, to sound cliché; it was colorful like a painting. Everything was painted in bright colors and sometimes even stayed looking like splotches of paint. As if the artist hadn’t cared to fill in the details. They were young though and couldn’t care to think too much into it. There were crazy things there too, fairies and dwarfs and other children, even adults. It was a whole new time and place, there and Minhyuk and Kyung seemed to be the most important people; even though they were so young.
They’d never gone in alone, always waited until Kyung was able to come over for a while or even for the night. And every time, they’d wait until the adults didn’t come to check on them, too busy entertaining or arguing or something equally uninteresting before they’d go under. And it was their secret, they didn’t tell any of their other friends; it was between them and that’s how it would stay. But one day it had gone wrong, something bad had happened and Kyung had run away from home.
“Minnie! Dad says we’re leaving!” He was in tears by the time he’d made it up to the other boy’s room, collapsing against Minhyuk’s chest and sobbing irrationally.
“Leaving? Like going to visit grandma?” Minhyuk smiled slightly, trying to put a smile on the other’s face.
“No! Leaving forever, to some weird place called N-new Z-zee-something!” Kyung shook his head and tugged on Minhyuk’s hand, pouting and giving his best puppy dog look, though he didn’t have to try too hard. The other boy usually did anything he asked. “Let’s run away! I don’t want to leave you Minnie…” He sniffled and then started towards the bed, fully intending on going under, into Paradise.
Minhyuk looked apprehensive, biting his lip and glancing worriedly at the door where he could hear his parents talking to Kyung’s. “Maybe we shouldn’t today…” He tugged Kyung back only to have the boy glare at him.
“Fine, if you wont come with me, I’ll go alone!” The words had been foul, but he’d done it anyways, even with Minhyuk trying to pull him out from underneath the bed. But once he was under, his eyes closed, he was in. Running down a fresh spring meadow into the village they’d become so well known in.
But he hadn’t known what would happen in the real world, that every time they came to this secret world of theirs, they actually were physically there. No longer under the bed until they were ready to go topside again. He didn’t know a thing until he resurfaced and found out that he’d been gone for three days, though it had only felt like a few hours spent with the village children, fishing and picking flowers.
Minhyuk was in tears, both of their mom’s were in tears and it was the strangest thing, to come out of his best friend’s bedroom and have his dad hug him and hold him tight until he almost felt suffocated. Kyung was so overwhelmed, not understanding completely the severity of what had happened, that he begun to cry as well. Moving was inevitable though and eventually, after everyone had gotten over the scare, it was time for Kyung to leave with his parents to New Zealand.
It was a sad day; he’d given Minhyuk the tightest hug he could before he was pulled away and strapped into his seat in the car. “Minnie! I’ll come back for you I promise!” Kyung shouted before the door was closed and he was only able to wave at the other boy, Minhyuk waving back at him as they watched each other fade into the distance.
And now, they were together again, both of them accepted into Brand New Stardom and made into the charismatic dancer B-Bomb and self acclaimed visual rapper in Block B. It was exciting; Kyung had always wanted to be a rap star, since he’d discovered hip-hop in the states. As he’d grown up, his goal of coming back to Korea for Minhyuk became pushed to the back of his mind. Until now, it had suddenly resurfaced, that childhood promise that he’d so carelessly forgotten. And now, he was sure that Minhyuk had no idea who he was anymore. They’d been so young and impressionable; of course he’d been forgotten.
He sighed heavily and adjusted his glasses, continuing to doodle something he’d remembered from that time under the bed, from their Paradise. He was so absorbed in the memories, the fairies that landed so freely on your fingertips but at the same time wouldn’t hesitate to nibble on your fingertips if you got too excited; the places that they could go to, the dock and the meadow. They’d met mermaids while they were there and now Kyung was beginning to think he’d been a crazy child with an over active imagination.
But then he’d remember that day, the day where he’d actually gone missing into this world. It couldn’t have been his imagination then. He sighed softly and looked up, jumping with a quiet yell of surprise at the sight of Minhyuk sitting next to him and staring intently at the doodles.
“I didn’t know you could draw…” Minhyuk looked up, his expression serious, lips pursed slightly and his fingers pulling the piece of paper over to him to get a better look.
Kyung shrugged absently, rubbing his face slightly, “I didn’t know I could either, I was just lost in my head. Thinking of Paradise…” He looked down, biting his lip, letting the older boy think what he wanted about that statement. He twirled the pencil around in his fingers and made a face at the tabletop and then looked up when he heard Minhyuk’s soft sigh and the paper dropped to the table again.
The older boy was looking at him with a pensive expression that quickly turned apologetic. “I can’t take you to that Paradise anymore. We moved when I was 11 and even then, it took longer to get there by myself then it had been with you and even more so when I got older. And then we moved and I couldn’t ever get there again.” He shrugged and picked up the picture again, pointing at the small fairy Kyung had drawn on the paper, he’d given it enough details to make it recognizable to the other.
“She really missed you when I said you weren’t coming back.” He laughed softly, “Now when I think about it, I think it must make me seem crazy. It was like our own Neverland without having to worry about pirates or the lost boys.”
Kyung was confused, it had been months since their debut and even longer since their trainee days when they’d been drilled together on how to dance and how to sing their songs. And this was the first time that the other had made any effort to talk to Kyung about their childhood, how close they’d been or their special place beneath the bed. If he’d remembered the whole time, why hadn’t he said anything?
“How come…why’d you wait so long to talk to me about it?” He frowned, crossing his arms over his chest and getting defensive.
“How come you didn’t talk to me? Why didn’t you keep in contact? Why didn’t you keep your promise?” Minhyuk smiled bitterly, shaking his head at the other boy. “I know it was a long time ago, it’s hard to remember things, but I know our parents kept in contact with each other.” He ran his fingers through his hair and sighed softly. “I didn’t want you to look at me like I was crazy if you didn’t remember me.”
Kyung frowned, lips pursed in a slight pout and he put his pencil down, leaning forward on the table and letting out his own sigh. “My parents didn’t tell me much, for awhile it was like they didn’t want me to even think about us ever being friends, ever having spent so much time together or even that time I’d apparently gone missing.” He shrugged slightly, “eventually I stopped talking about it and then after that I pushed it out of my mind. School became more important and then so did my dream of becoming a rap star.”
He frowned and smacked his face lightly, a blush coloring his cheeks. “I didn’t mean to, it just… didn’t come back to me until recently. I almost wish it was that easy again, to just hide under the bed and be somewhere else for awhile.” He looked up at Minhyuk and offered a tentative smile. “I did come back to Korea though… granted it wasn’t for you.” He let his head rest on the table and drummed his fingers against the surface slightly. “I didn’t even start thinking about Paradise again until the other day and since then all of those memories have been flooding my head.” He made a face and looked up at Minhyuk, who was staring at him with a strange expression. And then the elder was smiling and leaning across the table to brush his lips lightly against Kyung’s.
Kyung reared back and covered his mouth with the back of his hand, frowning at Minhyuk. “What the hell?”
Minhyuk grinned and Kyung blushed, unable to do anything as the other pulled his hand down and covered his lips with his own. It was unexpected and he wasn’t into guys or anything, but for some reason he couldn’t pull away, he found something in the kiss to be strangely enjoyable. And when Minhyuk finally pulled away, it was after Kyung had just begun to lean into the kiss.
“Sorry, I couldn’t help it.” The elder shrugged and bit his lip slightly, laughing softly. “I was wondering why I had such a big crush on you… now I know.” Minhyuk nodded, pinching one of Kyung’s cheeks slightly and tapping the teen’s mouth closed. It was the first he’d heard of the other member liking him and he was surprised to say the least.
“How do you know?”
“Because we have history together… and you’re actually really cute.” He nodded his head and chuckled softly at Kyung’s affronted look. “Maybe the fans think your sexy, but your not fooling me.” He shook his head and then frowned slightly. “But I guess before I keep calling you cute, I should ask you how you feel about being with me…” And he gave Kyung an imploring look, some strange cross between a failed kicked puppy expression and a girlish pout.
“Uh…” He bit his lip and looked down at the paper and a small smile stretched across his lips and he looked back up at the man. “I guess that wouldn’t be too bad…but only if you promise to take me to Paradise.” He smirked and then let Minhyuk smash their lips together again.
