The next day Sabrina and Mark were able to take London home. Sabrina sat in the back seat beside her for the short drive and she fussed a little before falling asleep. When they got in the house Sabrina set the car seat down on the table and lifted her tiny daughter out while Mark carried the bags upstairs. He returned to the living room to find Sabrina on the couch with London against her chest, starting to cry a little.
“I think she’s hungry. Would you grab the nursing pillow for me?” Mark nodded and ran upstairs again to grab it. “Ohhh.” Sabrina cooed at London and then kissed one of her chubby cheeks. When Mark came back down London’s screams were getting louder.
“She takes food seriously.” Mark chuckled while Sabrina got her set up to eat. It didn’t take long before her cries quieted and she ate happily.
“I love being a mommy.” Sabrina smiled at Mark.
“And I love being a daddy.” Mark agreed and brushed his hand over London’s head. “But do you know what I love just as much?”
“What?” Sabrina looked curious.
“Watching you be a mom. It suites you.” He smiled.
Sabrina’s cheeks turned light pink and she looked down at London.
“I watched you with other kids,” Mark continued, “and I knew you loved them, but somehow it’s different with our own daughter.”
“I didn’t think I could love one person this much.” Sabrina attempted to explain it.
“Me neither.” Mark agreed. “When you were pregnant with her I told my mom about how things had already changed and she said to just wait until the baby was born. I didn’t believe her but she was right.”
“Aren’t mothers always?” Sabrina winked.
“I guess so.” He smiled.
“I think she’s full. Would you burp her so that I can go shower?”
“Yep.” Mark shifted on the couch and lifted London onto his chest, gently patting her back. She started to squirm and whine a bit so Mark stood and gently bounced her.
“What’s wrong baby girl?” He said quietly and then kissed the top of her head. He slowly made his way over to the entertainment stand and popped the cd of lullabies out of its case and put it in the cd player. He turned the volume down so that it was soft background music and continued to sway London gently. Her cries quieted slowly and just after she fell asleep Sabrina came back down the stairs. She moved to stand beside Mark, one arm around his waist and the other rubbing London’s back.
“Look at my perfect family.” She kissed the baby’s soft hair and then smiled at Mark.
“It is pretty perfect, isn’t it?” Mark agreed and then lowered his head to kiss her.
“I’m going to make some lunch. Anything special you want?” Sabrina asked when their lips parted.
“Why don’t you let me make some sandwiches and you can sit down.” Mark moved to hand London to Sabrina, but she stopped him.
“I’m fine,” She smiled, “and London seems pretty happy with her daddy right now. So let me make the sandwiches and then I’ll come sit down.”
“If you’re sure.” Mark agreed and went to sit down on the couch while Sabrina headed for the kitchen.
“Do you want anything to dr…” Sabrina stopped talking when she came around the corner to find Mark asleep on the couch with London lying peacefully on his chest, her tiny fist wrapped around his thumb.
She quietly went back to the kitchen, set the plates on the table and found her camera. Being very careful not to wake either of them, she tiptoed back into the living room and took a picture. As she looked at it, making sure it was a good one, she heard Mark stir and looked up.
“I was more tired than I thought.” He said quietly, “How long have I been asleep for?”
“Only about ten minutes.” Sabrina told him. He tilted his head to the side to see his sleeping daughters face. “Still hungry?”
“Yeah, just let me put her down in the swing.”
