Extra note: Sorry this one took so long to post. Homework is kicking my butt and I completely forgot about it! I’ll try to keep up and get the last ones posted in the next few days.
Sabrina opened her eyes to find her hospital room empty. She sat up slowly and saw her bag sitting on the chair by the window so she carefully got up, found her pyjamas and went into the tiny bathroom to change. She came back out and crawled back into her bed, content to rest and wait for Mark to return from wherever he was. She had just closed her eyes when there was a quiet knock on her door and a nurse came in, wheeling a clear basinet with their baby girl in it.
“Someone’s ready for a feeding.” She said when she saw that Sabrina was awake. “Do we have a name for her yet?” She asked as she helped Sabrina get set up.
“Not yet.” Sabrina admitted.
“That’s ok.” The nurse smiled. After the baby had been sucking for a couple of minutes she left the room.
Sabrina was just finishing up feeding when she heard the door creak open and Mark came in with a huge bouquet of many different pink flowers.
“For my special girls.” He smiled when he saw Sabrina’s surprised face.
“They’re beautiful.” She said. “That’s where you were?”
“I left about two hours after you fell asleep and went home to shower and change, get the flowers, and also pick up this.” He pulled out a wrapped package from behind the large vase. Sabrina gestured for him to take the baby when he handed it to her and he lifted their tiny daughter into his arms.
“What is it?” She asked before tearing off the paper.
“Open it and see.” Mark sat down in the chair beside the bed and adjusted the pink blanket around the baby’s face. He lifted his head to watch Sabrina split open the paper and her eyes grow big.
“What is this?” She asked again, this time having a hint of an idea.
“Derek, Julianne, and I found some spare time to record some lullabies.” Mark explained what Sabrina had assumed from reading the cover of the cd in her hands. “Your mom gave me a tape that she said you used to listen to all the time before bed and we recorded most of the songs that were on it and some that my mom used to sing to me.”
“Are you serious?” Sabrina flipped the cd over to read the list of songs that was printed on the back. “Rock-a-bye baby, Pretty Little Horses, Lavender’s Blue..” She read off the titles and her smile grew. “Brahms Lullaby?” She stopped.
“I know it’s your favourite.” Mark explained, “And I know words have been put to it but we didn’t use them. I just played it on the guitar.”
“I can’t wait to listen to it.”
“Do you like it?” Mark asked.
“I love it.” She beamed. “And I’m sure our baby girl will love it too.”
Mark looked down at the sleeping baby in his arms. “She still needs a name.”
“I know, and I was thinking about that when I fed her.”
“And?” Mark encouraged.
“What do you think of London?”
Mark thought for a moment, looking at the baby to see if it suited. “I like that.” He concluded. “Why London though?”
“Do you remember how we talked about naming her after someone, and I wanted a unique name?” She waited while he nodded, “Well I still do, but at the same time I want her name to mean something and London is perfect for that. It’s where you grew up and you absolutely love it there.”
“So do you.” Mark pointed out.
“I do, which is why it’s so perfect.” Sabrina finished.
“London.” Mark said, looking at the baby again as he did so. “I love it.” He smiled.
“She needs a middle name now.” Sabrina sighed.
“Any ideas?” Mark asked.
“I thought of Grace or Skye, but I’m not crazy about either.”
They were both quiet for a few minutes, thinking, and then Mark spoke. “What about Brielle?” He looked up at Sabrina, a glint in his eye. “Then she has a part of me, and a part of you.”
“London Brielle.” Sabrina said aloud, “I love it.”
“Me too.” Mark smiled.
