Short chapter is short.
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 She tried not to overanalyze it.
Key word: tried.
The time without him did her a lot of good in the long run. Riley accepted the reins with grace (and of course, an equally stunning wardrobe), and business went smoothly. Mitz did everything she was asked to, kept busy, and only went into the empty office after everyone had gone home.
She sat in one of the high-backed leather chairs and stared at his empty desk.
He’d kissed her.
She felt the heat rising in her cheeks every time she thought about it. She wondered if it meant anything. He’d never made any advances before, and for goodness sake, he had Riley. She blushed even harder when she thought of the two of them behind locked doors, and the triumphant smirk on Riley’s face when she left his office.
Did that mean…did he expect her to…
Mitz groaned and covered her face with her hands. What was she supposed to do in this situation? Clearly, she had to give him some sort of answer.
If she accepted his advances, she would have to become the queen of all poker faces. As soon as Riley found out about the situation, Mitz was as good as dead. If she declined…
Mitz laughed. She knew all too well that she wouldn’t say no. Ever since that night, she’d been catching herself daydreaming. Makoto had more than his share of good looks, and the personality to back it up. It wouldn’t take much to make her crack. It hadn’t.
Worrying about it wasn’t going to solve anything.
Mitz sighed. He’d be back in two and a half weeks. She’d worry about it then.

It was strange how quickly things settled back into normalcy once Makoto returned. The same routine, the same paperwork, the same greetings as he came into work, and the same goodbyes when he left.
It was as if the kiss had never happened.
Mitz began to wonder if she’d dreamed the whole thing up. Riley had been quite enthusiastic about his return, and although there hadn’t been any locked-door private sessions between the two, Mitz wondered if Riley had provided enough to distraction to make Makoto forget about the kiss.
Or perhaps it hadn’t meant anything after all. Maybe it was something he’d done on impulse.
Somehow, that thought hurt the most. Mitz fiddled absently with her key ring, feeling the key to his office hanging between the keys to her car and her apartment.
That key was an invitation, right? She was allowed access to him at any time, if she wanted. Or was he just offering her somewhere to escape from Riley while he was away?
Mitz wanted answers, but she was too afraid to ask.
