Time passed and before she knew it, Mitz had been working at the company (which she now knew was called Memoriam) for over a year. She felt relaxed and secure in her position. She kept up her sickeningly submissive demeanor around Riley, but had confidence in her value and capability. Business picked up, but Mitz actually found herself enjoying the late hours, not to mention the overtime pay. Late nights and early mornings usually meant she could spend more time with Makoto.

She had gotten over her schoolgirl-crush on him, and genuinely valued the time and conversations they had together. She understood and appreciated the different personas he took on at work. She saw him shamelessly flirting back with Riley, shrewdly managing accounts and business, coolly conducting meetings and interviews, and on one special occasion, she saw him lose his temper, and a (soon-to-be-ex)client left the office gingerly attending to a bloody nose.

But after hours, when he got to sit back and relax, Mitz had the privilege of witnessing his quick wit and sense of humor. He laughed easily and never failed to put a smile on her face. He seemed to like her company, and he was often inviting her in to have a drink and chat with him. They were often interrupted by Riley, but Mitz kept quiet and would leave his office and get back to work.

It was clear that Riley no longer viewed Mitz as a threat, and she was infinitely grateful for that. Things were much less tense, and although the silver-haired beauty was still condescending, her words no longer held the same bite.

Three months past her one year mark, Mitz and Makoto were seated in the library section of his office, discussing the upcoming schedule. He had a flight early the next morning, and would be away from the company for a full month. One of his biggest clients was undertaking a huge construction project, and Makoto wanted to oversee the final stages, to make sure that his investment was being properly put to use. Riley would take over in the meantime, and Makoto was giving Mitz last-minute pointers and instructions.

“You sure you can handle this?” he asked.

Mitz smirked. “Haven’t I proved myself already?”

He tapped his chin thoughtfully. “Very true, but I am letting Riley off her leash for a while. I just want to make sure you survive the experience.”

“Makoto.”

“Yes?”

“You say that as if you had her on a leash to begin with.”

He threw back his head and laughed. “Touché.” He got to his feet and stretched, rolling his neck and shoulders. Mitz walked over to the chair where he’d tossed his jacket and handed it to him.

“You have everything?”

Makoto patted at his pockets. “I believe so.” His eyes roamed over the bookshelves and he smiled. “I’ve got a present for you.”

Mitz blinked. “Oh?”

He reached into his pants pocket and tossed her a key. “I know how much you love this place,” he said, gesturing toward the books. “Feel free to come in any time you need to relax. You have my permission.” He watched her run her fingers over the silver key in the palm of her hand. “You have my key too. I suppose that helps.”

Mitz laughed and shook her head. “I don’t deserve this.”

“I disagree.”

Humbled, she met his eyes and smiled. “Thank you, Makoto. Really.”

He grinned back. “Just be sure to lock up when you leave.” With a wave of his hand, he turned and walked toward the door. He stopped, holding up a finger. “I forgot one thing.”

He retraced his steps to where Mitz was still standing with his key cupped in her hands. Without any explanation, he gently took her chin in his hand, leaned down, and kissed her. Mitz was too shocked to respond and stood there, eyes wide, as he pulled away.

“Curious,” was all he had to say.

For several minutes after he left, Mitz stood in the empty office, his key grasped firmly in one hand, and the fingertips of the other pressed gently against her lips.
