Chapter 1 - The Four Princesses

~~

Once upon a time, there were four princesses. Four special princesses, because each had their own little quirk or two. There was Princess Heechul, Princess Kibum, Princess Ryeowook, and Princess Kyuhyun. The four had been the best of friends since they were very young, practically like brothers. They loved their lives, except for one thing. They were all getting to that age where their parents were getting more and more obessed with getting them married off.

"I don't want to get married!" Heechul whined and flailed, kicking his feet and launching one of his shoes off straight at Kibum's head. "Opps.... sorry Bummie." Heechul's quirk was a bad habit of losing his shoe in one way or another, he also was under a strict midnight curfew by his parents.

Kibum sighed fixing his mussed black hair and handed the shoe back to the red-head. "It's alright, Rella." he said, refering to Heechul by his childhood nickname. Kibum's little quirk was the weirdest obession with apples. It was nice that the boy had chosen a healthy food as his favorite but it was strange to NOT see the boy with an apple in his mouth. Another thing was his high avoidence of wearing silk sashes with his gowns; the others would ask and he would just tell them he'd had a bad experience with one and say nothing more. He also tended to avoid his step-mother at all costs, said he didn't like the way she looked at him. "But I agree. This whole marriage thing is stupid."

The brunette in the blue and pink gown next to Heechul finally spoke up, "Not to mention..." He yawned. "All the suitors they've shown us are ugly as sin. No... uglier." He yawned again. Princess Kyuhyun had become a very lethargic boy upon turning sixteen.

"Why are you always so tired?" Heechul asked for the millionth time.

"Yeah." Kibum also pointed out for the millionth time, "You sleep for days on end some times and you're still not rested enough."

Kyuhyun shrugged, "My parents said something about an evil fairy that got mad she wasn't invited to my christening or something. I don't know I wasn't really paying attention, I was tired." Another yawn. "I just remember exploring the castle and touched a spinning wheel for some reason and pricked my finger. I've been like this ever since."

"Weird..." the other two said simultaneously.

"Anyways." A reddish-brunette piped up, "It sounds crazy but I'd kinda like to marry for love. And my father's law about only being able to marry a prince is camel crap!" Ryeowook huffed, smacking the water in the fountain they were sitting around.

"Ryeowook!" Kibum scolded.

Ryeowook covered his mouth. "Opps, sorry. It slipped."

"It's okay, we just didn't expect that from you." Kyuhyun said patting his shoulder.

Princess Ryeowook was the second oldest of the four after Heechul. He had big dreams and a short fuse, and sometimes a foul mouth, but it wasn't that often. He also liked sneaking into town dressed as a commoner but had a bad habit of forgeting his money. "You know what!" He said. "We should get out of the palace and not think about this for now."

"I am not dressing like a commoner." Heechul said sternly.

"We don't have to. We can go on a picnic in the forest."

Kyuhyun yawned yet again, "Well I could use some roses for my room."

Kibum nodded. "Me too. What kind do you have?"

"The pink ones off briar bushes."

"Those are nice, I prefer the red ones myself."

"And I can get some more jasmine. It's my favorite." Ryeowook bounced and clapped happily.

"I guess it's settled then." Heechul commented.

Later that afternoon, the four princesses were walking in the woods, their cloaks on to protect their nice gowns from nature. They'd managed to talk their way into not having a guard go with them. Finding a nice spot in a clearing with lots of flowers, they laid out their blanket and sat down to have their lunch.

After a while, Kyuhyun was napping under a tree with a basket of pink roses beside him. Heechul was laying on on the blanket enjoying the warm sun like a content kitten. Ryeowook was still picking jasmine, and Kibum was munching on his tenth apple of the day. But that's when, out of no where, they heard loud sounds. Loud enough to rouse Kyuhyun, "What's that?" he wondered, sitting up a bit.

"I don't know. It kind of sounds like marching." Ryeowook had a worried tone in his voice as he set his basket of jasmine with his things.

"It sounds like it's comming from over that hill over there." Heechul pointed out.

Kibum got up, "I'm going to see."

"Not alone you're not." Heechul also stood and he, Reyowook, and Kyuhyun joined Kibum in going to have a peek over the hill.

When they reached the top, they saw several companies of soldiers marching along the path. "They look weird..." Kyuhyun commented. "Their armor isn't silver and doesn't cover their whole bodies. I wonder what's going on."

"Maybe they're going to help some allies and have to cut through the kingdom to get there sooner." Ryeowook blurted out.

"That is logical..." Kibum mused.

They continued to watch the procession when something caught the eldest princess's eye. "Look." He said in slight awe and pointed.

The other three followed his gaze and in the middle of the procession of troops was a horse drawn carriage. Sitting beside the soldier driving the horse, was a young man of foreign origin. He was wearing a long dress close to the body, not poofy like the princesses, it was also bright red with gold dragons all over it. His blonde hair was tied up into a fancy bun. His hands were rested on his lap and his face held a solemn expression.

"He looks so sad..." Ryeowook sighed. "I wonder what's wrong."

"At least that explains the soldiers." Kibum said. "They must be escorting him somewhere. But I do wonder where that some where is."

"Me too..." Heechul trailed off as he took another step to try and get a better look. Then, sure enough, his shoe slipped off and rolled down the hill. "Oh shoot." Heechul said, keeping his language in check.

"I told you to wear shoes with straps." Ryeowook poked.

The foreign boy looked up hearing crunching leaves, he noticed something tumble down the hill just ahead of him. He looked to the driver, "Please stop, just a moment." Reluctantly the driver did and a soldier next to him helped the blonde down. Hurrying over to what he saw, he found it to be a slipper. A graceful brow was raised as he looked about and up the hill noticing what looked like four princesses. He smiled softly and started up the hill towards them.

"Lady Han Gen." One of the soldiers in different armor, probably a captian or something, spoke to the retreating back.

The blonde looked back with a small upturn of the lips, "I'll only be a moment." He turned back and walked up towards the others. "Hello." A soft-toned polite greeting. He took a quick glance down and handed the slipper to Heechul. "I think this is your's."

The red-head couldn't find words, he only nodded and put his shoe back on.

Kibum shook his head, "Excuse him. I'm Princess Kibum. The mute is Princess Heechul. The smaller one is Princess Ryeowook and...." he trailed off looking around and sighed. "One moment." He stepped away and came back a minute later pulling the youngest along. "And this is Princess Kyuhyun."

The blonde smiled and bowed, "Hello highnesses. I'm Lady Han Gen."

"So where are you headed?" Ryeowook asked.

Han Gen sighed a bit, "I'm on my way to meet my husband."

"You're married?" Kyuhyun yawned.

"Well he's more my husband to be..."

"What's he like?" Heechul finally managed to speak.

Han Gen's eyes traveled downward and sighed again, "Well... actually I've never met him...."

Ryeowook wrinkled his nose, "Arranged marriage? That sucks!" He covered his mouth right after, "Opps, sorry."

A shrug from the blonde, "Our kingdoms are at war... I'm kind of like a peace treaty..."

Heechul blinked. "Even worse!"

"My Lady!" The captian called up to the blonde.

Han Gen's shoulders dropped, the distraction of the princesses had given him a moment of happiness, he knew it wouldn't last long, but still wished it had lasted longer. "Well then... I suppose this is goodbye." The princesses all said their farewells and the soldiers and their charge continued on their way.

Once the last of the procession was out of sight, the princesses returned to their picnic spot. "Who do you think he's marrying?" Ryeowook wondered. "I mean if it's a nearby kingdom it's obvious we'll be invited."

Kyuhyun stretched, "Well let's see. There's only two kingdoms they could be going to in that direction. Prince Kangin's already engaged so it can't be him."

"The Beast is engaged?" Heechul questioned with a raised brow. "Who'd agree to marry that?"

Kibum rolled his eyes and folded his arms across his chest. "Obviously someone with a better attitude about how people are beneath their appearance than you, Rella."

Heechul narrowed his eyes. This time, instead of accidently flinging his shoe off, he purposefully took it off and threw it at Kibum.

"Anyways..." Ryeowook butted in before a larger argument ensued. "There's only one other kingdom they could be bringing him to..." He wrinkled his nose in somewhere between horror and digust. "The Lion King!"

"If that's the case, who ever arranged that marriage is insane." Heechul stated firmly.

The youngest watched the other three's reactions before asking his question, "Why do they call him the Lion King anyways?"

It was Kibum who explained, as usual. "Well they say, when King Siwon was little Prince Siwon he got a lion cub for his birthday as a pet, but the cub was very small and weak. It also happened that an apprentice fairy had forgotten her present, so she decided to bulk up the cub as her present. However, her spell screwed up and she accidently made Prince Siwon and the lion cub one."

Heechul rubbed his forehead a bit, though he was cautious not to mess up his hair. "Remind me to make it a rule at my future birthdays that any magic learners are not allowed to give me spells as presents." The other three nodded in full agreement.
