QUESTION: Why do I keep doing things like translating board meeting protocols and legal contracts for free as a favour to my dear friends whom I haven't seen in half a year because they're too busy and important to meet with me for a cup of coffee?

You're a bigger person then. I wouldn't do anything businessy-looking for free, unless it was for a charity/ngo. I mean, if it's board minutes, the board can bloody well pay. At least make them pay you in food ;)

But then imma greedy, greedy one who hates translating. I also have a weekend chock-full of microbiological procedures ahead of me. Oh joy.
