Hey, thanks for the tip, I'll check it out. ;)

Oh, I know I'm not alone. It's just that so many people irritate me by screwing up (in RL) right now that I'm kinda stuck in the 'if you want it done right do it yourself' mindset. *sheepish grin* It's easier to join things already up and running, no question. :D

I'd be on board for this, although I'm also unsure as to how to get it to work. I was whining about just this point in blcwriter's journal two days ago. She'd recced a story that I then read, and while I liked the writing I found the creative timeline too much like hard work. This is part of what I said there....

To ramble briefly, one of the things I don't find in fandom (in my limited experience of it) is any way to discuss honestly with people if you like a fic or not, and why, and what else might have worked and so on. The culture seems to be: leave a comment that says you loved it without reservation, or don't comment at all. And as an author I get the wounded feeling thing...
And yet I do want to know what people honestly think about my work and how I might be able to improve it. And I would like to chance to think constructively about why I do or don't like something that I have read and discuss it with other people who have read it.
There doesn't seem to be any way to do that in fandom. As an author: I am less worried about talking ( ... )

I agree with a lot of what you're saying here. In fact, I've posted this, and then checked verizonhorizon's link, and I thought, yeah, that's what I was talking about, but that's not what I really want. People are just gonna play nice and you'll never get to hear what they really think anyway ( ... )

It's a good idea, but it could very easily lead to wank and hurt feelings. And I hate fandom wank. :(
Just my two cents. :)

Wank is a question of moderating, and as for hurt feelings, sure. It could lead to that. As could any other interaction.

The thing is, there's no place where people could say what they really think without being accused of wank. Just because I didn't like something, doesn't mean I'm gonna trash it. I have the right not to play nice and be honest instead, is all I'm saying.

I admit that there are certain types of stories that I don't like in my fandoms. At the same time, I'm not going to go out of my way to leave a scathing review, expressing my hatred for the fic or the writer for writing their story. Everyone is free to use their imagination and write what they enjoy. I don't take fandom seriously. I can't. I use it to procrastinate from work.
I believe firmly that you should write what you love regardless of what others think. You can't be liked by everyone, after all.
As far as "if you've got nothing nice to say, say nothing" goes, I agree. If I have nothing nice to say about a fic, I won't review it. But that's entirely different to "say nothing except nice things", which I don't agree with at all.
I like you idea, but I'm afraid it is only a matter of time before it would lead to wank. IMO.

Yes, I know. I do take fanfics more seriously than most people tend to. That's my crazy and my problem. ;)

i think you need a strong mod for the comm, just to keep things civil. and i think it is often in the tone, if it is a concrit feedback handed out in a 'nice' way then i might (personally) not like it but i would admit that it is true. it does help.

but some feedback can be downright mean.

so i think the biggest challenge with such a community would be to find a mod or two with enough time to police the entries to make sure they stay civil.

at least that's my take on things :)

Strong moderation would certainly be an issue either way. *nods*
