The series did a great job in portraying the humanity in Temujin.

My favorite song is titled "Drunk (醉酒)". My Mongolian is as bad as it get, so I can't translate it word by word, but the rough idea is that whether it's better off to get wasted, be a bummer, & don't give a damn about anything, than be ambitious & driven.
At more than one point, Temujin did question if his desire to achieve is such a good thing. As he grew in power, those already in power, friends & foes alike, felt threatened, & plotted against him. So what could Temujin do? Relinquish his power to please those once dear to him? Weakening himself will only give his rivals the chance to eliminate him, for they couldn't afford to count on Temujin's good will indefinitely. And Temujin was in the same boat, he couldn't count on the good will of other powerful chieftains & step down. Conflict was inevitable, & Temujin just happened to be the victor. Once on the road to power, there's no turning back, for more & more blades will be pointing at your back, waiting for you to turn around & walk in to them. It's fair to say that at one point, Temujin had no choice but to forge ahead & become Genghi Khan, even though he might not want to pay the price for it. One by one, those dearest to him fell to his sword: his half brother Begter, his Anda (sworn brother) Jamuqa, & his godfather Toghrul.

BTW, did you know that Toghrul, a Nestorian Christian, is sometimes credited as Prester John?
