So at this moment I'm sitting in my favorite coffee house, Charlie's Coffee, and crocheting a little beanie cap. Okay, at this moment I'm typing on their public access computers, but moments ago and for the past four hours I've been crocheting. Regardless.
So I'm happily going along crocheting and listening to David Bowie (and earlier, Andrew Bird, and earlier, Snow Patrol) when I hear my neighbors say "and I pray for your soul" and I go "buzzuh?" because these are not words you normally hear in a coffee shop.
So I tune in, and am able to cobble together through their supreme unsubtlety (as the devoutly religious are nothing if not unsubtle, at least if they're Baptist or Catholic) and the thing is this: a mother and her daughter are being lectured, or are being given a sermon, whatever, over the daughter's apparent gayness. Obviously the mother's set this up because she is nodding along and smiling and the daughter is looking about three kinds of pissed and/or sick.
I want to strangle them. Everyone but the daughter. Dude, seriously, do we still think we can God the Gay Out? We really still think that? And fine, you want to think that, go ahead, that's your stupid ass thought process, but to do it in public? To subject that poor girl to religious ridicule IN PUBLIC? That's dispicable.
Like, ya know, fine. That's your religion. You think gay is a sin. Fine. So let the sinner live in their sin and go to hell, that's their fucking business, isn't it? Maybe you give them a heads up, if they ask you for your opinion on the matter, give a little "oh yeah, well, it's a sin, and sins are punishable by hell, so, what ever will be will be" if you feel like it, but jesus. This lecture. It's so hard for me to not jump up and yell "YOU FUCKING IDIOTS, JESUS H. CHRIST!"
Like, my grandmother is the most religious person you will ever meet, and by that I mean REAL religion, not this cockamamy (uh, however that's spelled) bullshit the church teaches you in it's inherantly contradictory way... She can quote hte bible word for word from cover to cover, but would she ever presume to tell someone else how to live their life and what they're doing wrong, or that they're going to hell? Never. Because why? Love thy neighbor.
