Is it just me, or does anyone else absolutely hate when fic writers make Riku's home life horrible? Either someone is an alcoholic, someone has walked out on their son and spouse, or his parents just hate him. I detest these stereotypes. Just because he turned to the darkness doesn't mean that he had a bad home life, or was beaten, or abandoned. It's just part of his character. And I highly doubt that Destiny Islands would have a large population of alcoholic, chain-smoking, and abusive parents. Riku seems pretty happy on Destiny Islands, besides the wishing to get away, but that doesn't seemed to be caused by a horrible lineage. That's just who he is. I was so disturbed by the stereotypes that I wrote my own momfic, and have gotten messages saying that my versions of the families are much better. So I'm obviously not the only one bothered by the cliches. I just wanted to hear your opinions on it.
