“Tell me why you needed me on this assignment again?” Veronica muttered as she flipped through a magazine on. She had been temporarily re-assigned to the White Collar Division in New York to help with an ongoing case that was similar to one she had been working on in LA.
“Well, a blonde in hand is worth two in the bush,” a voice murmured behind her, an arm slipping around her in a familiar manner. Veronica did her best not to elbow the person behind her, and instead gave Neal Caffrey the best gooey smile she could.
“You’re hand strays anywhere else, you’re a dead man,” she warned him cheerfully, her tone contrasting its content.
“Kids, play nice,” Special Agent Burke said over the radio, his voice slightly too loud in Veronica’s ear. She resisted the urge to make a face, and instead played her role, snuggling closer to Caffrey as they waited for their target to move.
“No need to be hostile, Agent Mars,” Caffrey whispered to her, his trademark hat pulled low over his face. “I’m not making you uncomfortable, am I?”
“Not in the least,” Veronica answered, not exactly lying. Sure, Caffrey was one hell of a good-looking man, but Veronica was done with charming bad boys. At least, that’s what she kept telling herself, right before she ended up with the next one. She knew that Wallace and Mac had a bet going over it, but she didn’t say anything. It was only fair since she had her own with both parties.
“Suspect’s on the move,” Agent Diana Barrigan's voice said sharply. Caffrey and Veronica waited a few seconds before meandering their way behind the hedge fund manager they were tailing. It wasn’t far, only about a block or so, but just as they were about to turn the corner, the man they were tailing started to turn around. Before Veronica could respond, Caffrey pulled her to the side and began kissing her passionately on the mouth. Before Veronica could pull away to protest, his eyes glanced upwards, and when she followed her gaze, she spied a spring of mistletoe hanging above them. Seconds later, he pulled back and gave her a roguish grin.
“Now that wasn’t too terrible was it?” he asked, as Veronica could swear Burke was on the other end of her earpiece muttering under his breath.
“You try that again, and I will kick your ass from here to Jersey,” Veronica promised him in a tone many had learned to fear over the years. Caffrey only smiled at her and offered her his arm.
“Ok, if you two lovebirds are done flirting we have a job to do,” Burke said. Veronica and Caffrey exchanged a look before continuing to trail their target, Veronica keeping a sharp eye out for any more inconveniently placed mistletoe.
