There are minute distractions in the whole, tiny anomalies, smidgens of movement and breaks and cracks in the structure that he had built so preciously and had so readily abandoned. Lights that blink on and off, whispers of sentiment and broken ties, a thousand steps for a thousand floors and a thousand goodbyes; a flickering streetlight, a spattering of cracks along a sidewalk, the ubiquitous murmur and laughter of normalcy that was always out of reach.
This is his city.
Empty of voices, cold and pressing and distant and so very unlike home; but still so very familiar, because he knows that one day it will dissolve - the lights and the emptiness and the heavy quiet - and all that remains will be their infectious laughter and warm smiles and all too brief companionship. A trio, once again.
But now, now he can only wait, as painful and wrenching as it is.
He can only wait, as Darkness’ façade enters the light twists the kingdom behind a drawn curtain.
He can only wait, as the light fades, as the dust settles, as walls close in and the skyscrapers tower.
