challenge: [223] the city
title: the silence
wordcount: 245
notes: riku ended up alone at some point, right? my mickey mouse from fantasia doll is disagreeing with me, but facts is facts.

He had been in cities before - every city that had ever been, he sometimes thought. They always screamed. Cars screeched by too fast, the people shoved, everything moved and ran and yelled. He had his own city, and it was loud and bizarre and always alive.

This city was screaming, too, even though it was dead. Trucks, smashed into two, rusted in the rain. Sidewalks started in the middle of the street, and they went nowhere. The stairs in the sidewalk took him to subway trains that were dripping with dank underground plants. The tall buildings that he still viewed with a child’s eagerness in the other cities were still lit…but inhabited by monsters and ghosts. He didn’t look up at them here.

The silence was screaming here and that was something King Mickey, who was born in music and sound, could not bear.

He was ashamed of his terror, but he had never lived in silence. He looked up at Riku, who nodded understandingly. Perhaps condescendingly, too, but Mickey deserved it for letting his protégée -- his friend - go into the silent City that Never Was alone.

But the awful lonely howls of no one at all - the overwhelming emptiness that went beyond mere Darkness - he could not articulate his panic. The place was the antithesis to his rule, his life, his existence...he would take the shame and regret, if only he could go back to the shrieking sounds and noise of the living cities.
