spoilers? Spoilers for Birth By Sleep
notes: Whoo, it's been a while. I meant to use this as a sort of let's-ease-back-into-fiction-writing prompt. Personally, I think it came out very rusty and ambiguous...but that's okay.

the marble is cool beneath her fingertips, pulsing in all brilliance and white light, silent and still and eloquent so that she cannot bear to open her eyes and see what remains.

Change…Had it never brushed our lives, urged our hesitant steps, and whispered in our ears, would this be all?

the chamber is smaller, the shattered stained glass no more and crumbling pillars made adamant again, but fluttering heart beats and pressing silence expose all, and she knows that she is alone.

Would we have remained locked in prevalent battle with lurking malevolence, but still unbreakable; the chains of too many moments of joy and laughter and love forever intact?

she is alone, even as her comrade lies in eternal bliss of mind and dream, mere feet from where she stands; he is entirely unblemished, and yet her heart writhes in agony for both him and Terra - spirited away by traitorous force, by darkness’ own manifest…

but she must leave. she cannot dwell here, a place of too many memories twisted sour; too many bright smiles vanquished, yet discernable even underneath the ethereal light that winds its way around the chamber. she cannot dwell here, when the shadows still twist under adversary’s blade and imperil the light.

she cannot dwell here, because Ventus would have chastised her for it, all bright eyes and eternal smile and unwavering determination.

she cannot dwell here, because Terra would never have allowed her to become so consumed in fear’s restricting hold.

But would the pain be any less?

she must end this. for all their sakes.

For all that ever was, and all that ever comes to be - know what is never forgotten. Know that you are not lost.

Aqua casts a final, sweeping glance around the chamber, lithe fingers closing around the star-shaped charm that hangs at her waist, before facing the unwinding path.

I will find you.
