Title: In the Whiteness
Challenge: [186] Black and White
Word Count: 324
Notes: I always wondered why everything was white in Castle Oblivion…

“Why is everything white here? Why are all the walls painted white?”

She asked the questions out loud, expecting no answer. Of course her “caretaker” wouldn’t answer that. Just like all the other questions she posed; they would remain unanswered and useless, like wasted words launched at a stolid brick wall. But one-sided conversations were much better than suffocating silence.

“Because.”

But this time, it went through, and she had to hide her surprise behind the white sketchbook she held in front of her face.

“What do you mean, because?”

He shrugged, a distant look on his face. “Just…because.” She returned to her drawing, disappointed. He probably didn’t even care; he just wanted to say something to break the silence, no doubt.

She scratched the black crayon on her canvas, seeing silvers of wax curl around it, like tiny shadows. Having finished it, she held it up for him to see.

“What do you think?” He looked over, raising his thin eyebrows slightly. But, without a word, he turned his head back to its original position, his eyes focused on nothing in particular.

Frowning slightly, she looked over her drawing of a hooded Organization member, a stark black against the creamy white paper. Suddenly, a flash of understanding came to her.

“I know why the walls are white, Axel!”

“Why?” He replied, glancing over at her.

“Because, no matter what, black always stands out against white. It can be easily seen and distinguished. It can make things appear that shouldn’t appear.” He suddenly started to look interested, but then a frown crossed his face.

“And what about white against white, then?” He nodded his head over towards her white dress, and she fingered the hemmed edges of it involuntarily. She looked around at the white chair, the white walls, even the white flowers which stood in the white vase that cast a white shadow. She felt a lump form in her throat.

“It…fades away…”
