One single step and Sora was back home.
His heart leapt as he ran through the final door and he saw Destiny Islands, just as they were before the Heartless came and Riku disappeared and Kairi’s heart was taken. And, because the land was just the same, Sora expected Riku and Kairi to come running out of the jungle, and then to wake up in his room and find that his journey was a nightmare.
However much he loved Donald and Goofy and King Mickey, Sora needed this to be a nightmare.
But his friends never arrived, or at least they never arrived in the way he expected.
First, a dark voice spoke, and his islands changed; the ocean turned to poison and his favourite tree house to dust. Then Riku arrived, but he was distorted, his appearance untrue, for Ansem spoke through his body and used his voice as a force to take Sora’s confidence away.
But Sora was strong and resilient, and as Donald and Goofy stood by his side he swiped at Ansem, refusing to believe that Riku was truly trapped in the darkness.
The Keyblade, though, was not enough, and the islands and Riku stayed the same - one a cracked depiction of the place where Sora grew up, the other a broken copy of one of his best friends.
All Sora could see was Ansem as he fought, but in his heart he could feel the destruction of the islands. There was once a passion in them, like a fire that burned beneath the heated sands. But all that was gone now, the pressing darkness slowly closing in on the islands that were once so full of light.
Soon, Ansem separated Sora from the rest of those he loved most, the two battlers trapped inside a vortex of darkness while Donald and Goofy could only watch on helplessly. Then, another battle, and another, and another, and Sora felt his strength begin to wane. Donald and Goofy returned, though, and his strength flowed back, and finally the last battle was fought, and Ansem fell.
But, the islands still lay in ruin. The nightmare went on.
Blinding light emanated from Kingdom Hearts, and in the brightness Sora found Riku, the true Riku, and together they closed the Door to Light.
The last thing Sora saw on Destiny Islands was Kairi, and then he knew his nightmare was over, because his friends were back. Yes, he had to leave them, but he knew they were safe, Riku with the King and Kairi on the islands, which were no longer devastated, but revitalised. The light replaced the darkness, and normalcy replaced the surreal disaster brought upon their home by Ansem.
And now that Sora knew at least two of his friends were safe, it didn’t matter where he travelled; he always had a definite home to return to.
