Not long ago, I had an idea. I don't have many of them, so it was kind of a big deal.
Here it is: Let's get rid of the concept of responsibility the way it works now. I struck that last bit, because it's misleading; I don't think it does work very well. I think it's very much broken.
See, the world would have us believe it is very noble to take care of our own. Society says that the "responsible" thing to do is make sure you provide the best life possible for you and your family. If you have enough to spill over onto your friends (and I'm not referring only to money, either), you're generous. If you drop some dime or some time into the odd corporate charity, even, you must have it made.
Only, where does that leave everyone else? What does that do to our holistic concept of humanity? I don't know, and I don't have any idea of how to change it, or into what to change it. I just have this feeling that, when we segregate our responsibilities, we lose sight of the big picture.
We become a world full of boys in bubbles.
