Conclusion of the Company series, which is a rather surreal train wreck. A lot of it was telegraphed in the previous books, and for the rest the author clearly wanted what she wanted and wasn't going to allow the characters to object nor offer alternatives (I was particularly annoyed with how passive Mendoza was). This book doesn't even try to explain how any of the weird stuff works (especially Crome's radiation: someone reaches into Mendoza's mind and turns it off and it's never mentioned again). This is the second novel in a row I've read that jumped around in time (though this has better justification and labeling), and the second book this month to mention the philosophies of Jeremy Bentham.
