For the past couple of months, Felix has been on sub-cutaneous fluids twice a week and a special diet for his kidney disease. After playing around with all kinds of different wet and dry special kidney diet foods (all of which he hated), we have finally found a formula that he seems to tolerate (thank you, Royal Canin!). We also put him on a medication that stimulates his appetite. I was somewhat amused to read that it orginally developed for humans for anti-depression, but has the helpful side-effects of decreasing nausea and increasing appetite, making it a great drug for cats with kidney disease. Between the two, he finally seems to be gaining weight. We don't have a good scale for him, but he seems to be somewhere around 12 lbs. This isn't quite back up to 14-15 pounds that was his usual when he was in his prime, but much better than the emaciated 10.5 that he was when he was at Dove Lewis. Phew! He might not live forever, but we can be in happy denial for a little while longer.
