On Saturday, the Griers (Aaron, Kathy, and John) and I started out with a late breakfast at Paradox where we were joined by Kim. Mmmm... fruit smoothies and Stumptown coffee. Afterwards, we dropped our leftover at home, put on some sensible shoes, and drove across Ross Island Bridge to find the Marquam Trailhead that we used to hike the rest of the way up the hill to Council Crest. The Marquam Trail is absolutely beautiful... it's hard to believe that such a place exists within the city. It's roughly about 2 miles up and another 2 miles back down, so it's a nice afternoon hike that certainly helped burn off those Paradox calories. It was a beautiful day at Council Crest and Mt Hood, Ht St Helens, Mt Adams, and Mt Rainier were all visible. We definitely needed a dog, though... just about all the other hikers we encountered had dogs.

Then I dropped off Kim at her hotel, and the rest of us headed back to the house for some R&R: reading, chatting, and lounging on the couch. Eventually, Kim showed up again, having enjoyed her own R&R, and we walked over to It's a Beautiful Pizza where we ordered the Thai pizza. Mmmm... peanut sauce and Thai goodness on a pie. My favorite. We walked back and hung out on the front porch for a while where we were visited by all the neighborhood cats. It was a perfect Portland evening. Warm enough to be comfortable, but with a nice breeze. We chatted on my front steps and watched the sun go down... this is one of my favorite activities.

Kim and I drove to Beaverton and picked up Joanne, my niece, and then all of us headed over to the Clinton Street Theater for the Rocky Horror Picture Show where we met up with Pat and Heather. There was an obnoxious guy ata the door who wanted me to pretent that I was a Rocky virgin because it had been over 6 months since we had last been there. Bah to that. It's not my job to artificially inflate their Virgin numbers. I also do not like bullies. This stupid stubborness on my part probably added some unnecessary stress to the whole event.. it's probably not my best personality trait. Anyway. It was Cabaret night. Yay! Unfortunately for us, it was Cabaret "switch" night, in which the Cabaret actors all switch to a different role, one that they probably don't know very well. Plus, they all dressed up as video game characters instead of Rocky characters. So, we had Lara Croft as Eddie and the Mario brothers as Riff and Magenta. Very confusing. But we got through it all and managed to have a fairly good time.

I love the Rocky sub-culture. I was on the fringes of it for part of high school, although I was never a hardcore member. Rocky kids... at least the ones in Portland... are never the "too cool for you" hipsters, although they may try to imitate them. There's always an excited, almost nervous, energy that is glorifying in finding a place where they can be crazy and silly and nerdy and still fit in with everyone else around them. It's not unlike the energy at a SF convention, actually.
