Oh, to have the time and understanding.

So in the last week while I was sick I got it into my head that I should start dabbling in High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography.

After compiling the tools I needed, I took some sample photos of the pets and a candle holder, and fired up Luminance HDR to see what I could do ( Read more... )

plonq has experimented with HDR a bit. You're best off trying to get a shot of someplace with a lot of contrast: bright sky, dark terrain. Dusk seems to be a good time to try it.

I was wondering if there was a scenario that lent itself far better to HDR. My problem was that almost all of the HDR images I've seen haven't indicated what they looked like before, so it was difficult picking out how it may've started.

There was a bit of disappointment with the cat photos, as he was in a darker area with the light bands from the blinds striping across parts of him.

I'll see if I can start with something tried and true like dusk and see what happens!

Thanks for the insight!

I keep meaning to play around more with HDR, but so far every time the whim to experiment takes me, I don't have a tripod with me.

My results without a tripod have been so-so.

Wow... how can one small chart say so much? I love the HDR-hole.

On the week-end I specifically set-up with my tri-pod, but ironically the image I had the most luck with I didn't use it. Of course, for anything with more than 3 exposures (aka the auto-bracket) I don't think I'd be able to pull it off.

But yeah, it seems that when-ever a tripod is really in need, it's never around.

Though I am quite intrigued about the one approach of using a single RAW image and manually creating different exposures. I know it may not be quite as dynamic, but apparently it can be used to pull some older photos back into the world of the living.
