my neighbor across the street is pretty amazing. if i remember correctly, she will be turning 81 this year, yet she is as smart as can be. thelma c. is her name. instituting what i was taught as a small child, i call her mrs c(last name).
mrs. c. lost her husband this past year. her own health and hearing is beginning to fail. she lives in a single-family, two-story house. she has family that comes to visit her on on a regular basis. when she went into the hospital this summer, her family housed her with them until she was strong enough to be alone again. and it didnt take long until she was.
mrs c. is feisty. she is proud of who she is and what she can do by herself. she tears up at the thought of her late husband. yet, she strongly moves on and makes meals for visitors, waters her garden and waves to me every time she sees me. she is a wonderfully giving woman. when my husband and i moved into the neighborhood, she gave me what she told me is a very rare plant. then, at the beginning of the summer, i confessed to her that we had not planted any vegetables in our garden. she gave me two starter tomato plants, and extracted from me the promise that she would get a few of what we yielded.
after a tough and dry summer, i yielded a few, albiet small, tomatoes. as i promised, i recently brought them over to her one night that i knew she was home. she made me sit down and enjoy some food she had prepared for visiting family.
as we (she, her family and i) chatted, i came to learn that mrs. c. is a whiz on the internet. no, she doesnt use a traditional computer -- she is connected via webtv. we exchanged emails and shortly after i returned home, i sent her an email, thanking her for dinner. her email is a lifesaver for her. because she has hearing loss, she is able to connect with those around her. i was astonished, and amused, to get her reply email just hours later. embedded in her email was a URL to a webpage that she has created. and she used lol. i about wet myself at my technologically advanced elder neighbor.
i hope she is around for many more years....she reminds me of my grandmother.
(more later.. maybe?)
