Ok, Kuranda is nice. You should visit, if you are in the neighborhood. It's a small village that started during the Australian gold rush, about 30 kilometers from cairns in the mountains. It's small, and it's touristy, but it's a nice change from the city and you are truly in the middle of a tropical rainforest.
It's also neat to get too. While a road exists (boring), you can either take the old train, or, beleive it or not, a skyrail that goes over the rainforest canopy 8 km (16 both way...obviously). The skyrail starts on the coast at sea level, and rises up in the mountains.
I did both train and skyrail.
