On the Edge of the Snow

Feb 24, 2023 14:53

Snow is not the novelty here that it is in the Bay Area and Southern California. The current storm is only dropping small amounts on us here, whereas in the Sierra Nevada to the west of us, Interstate 80 was closed for hours, with the maximum closure being from the Nevada state line clear down the Colfax. This storm appears to be moving slowly, and I took pictures at intervals.

Most of the previous week's accumulation was gone and the porch and sidewalk clear before dawn.

Light snow started falling in the mid-morning. I hardly noticed, being head-down on Day Jobbe stuff.

Because there was a lot of wind behind this snow, much of it did not stick in open areas, and with the air temperature hovering right around freezing, much of the snow did not stick, period. By early afternoon, after lunch and before I went to clear the porch and walks, there was less then 3 cm at most anywhere, making it relatively easy to sweep and shovel.

Of course, just as I finished clearing the porch and walks and started to bring in more firewood, it started snowing again.

Meanwhile, the birds seemed to appreciate our generosity.

I cleaned and refilled the bird feeder yesterday evening. Some of the birds have figured out how to use it, including the one you see coming in from the right trying to chase the others away so it can have it to itself.

The aggressive little bird had to settle for a share of the feeder. Other birds not visible in the show were on the ground below the feeder waiting for their more intrepid fellows to spill seed over the side of the feeder.

The current forecast still shows us getting around 10 cm total out of the storm today and tonight, followed by clearing tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Lisa's foot has healed to the point where she isn't carrying a crutch with her, although she's still moving slowly, favoring the other foot, and not carrying anything heavy or making sudden moves that might put any sideways motion on the ligaments in her left foot.
