Melting Snow

Jan 05, 2023 16:01

The latest band of storms, while pummeling California and the western Sierra, dropped negligible snow this morning, then blew through, leaving clearer skies and sun that started to melt the snow from the past few days.

The streets had melted sufficiently that I could get out for a short walk, which allowed me this picture of the house in the melting snow. You can see a good coat of snow on the Pah Rah Mountains in the distance.

Also note the strip of bare ground between the main snow-covered area to the left and the street to the right, sort of like there was a sidewalk there. I wondered what had caused that until I remembered that there is a sewer pipe running along that line. I suspect that it's slightly warmer than the surrounding ground, so it melted first.

And speaking of melting, this row of icicles was rapidly melting, and once the sun came out, they fairly quickly (by Noon or so) dropped off the roof. The area under these icicles isn't a place where we go, so we left them alone, while knocking down all of those overhanging places where people might go.

As the temperature got up as high as 7°C today, much of the snow melted today, except in sheltered areas or where we had piled it up while clearing the walks.

I went to Big R Ranch & Home today and found that they had one pallet of Pres-to-Logs in stock. I was able to buy it in advance and have them put a SOLD sign on it. We'll go get it either tomorrow or Saturday when Lisa can get the utility trailer hitched and ready to go.
